The Broncos are going to get their first serious look at rookie QB Tim Tebow, who makes his first NFL start with Kyle Orton’s ribs too sore to play. The Broncos have won six of their last seven games here, but the Raiders are still alive in the playoff race and figure to make amends. Raiders RB Darren McFadden is coming off a 123-yard rushing game. He ran for three TDs and 165 yards when the Raiders won at Denver, 59-14. McFadden needs seven rushing yards to become Oakland’s first 1,000-yard rusher since Justin Fargas in 2007. The Broncos are still on track to hire John Elway for a front-office position once the season ends.
Packers GM Ted Thompson viewed available veterans such as Parker, Justin Fargas, Kolby Smith and J.J. Arrington as poor fits for the Packers' zone running game and liked the physical running style of the powerful Nance. Also available was New England's Laurence Maroney, who was traded to the Denver Broncos Tuesday.
Thompson should be getting help in the form of sixth-round draft choice James Starks after the Miami Dolphins game Oct. 17. The Packers were very high on Starks coming out of the draft but were unable to get him on the field much because he suffered a hamstring pull during off-season workouts and then aggravated it in a conditioning test at the start of training camp.
He spent all of camp on the physically unable to perform list, where he remains. Under NFL rules, he is eligible to return to practice after the sixth game. At that time, the Packers will have three weeks to decide whether to put him on the 53-man roster, place him on injured reserve or release him.
The door is open for rookie James Starks once he comes of the PUP list. It may be a good idea to stash him on your roster...especially in keeper leagues.
New England traded running back Laurence Maroney to Denver. Compensation not know yet
We don't expect Maroney to have much immediate fantasy value as Knowshon Moreno is the unquestioned starter. However, the Patriots were stocked at RB and Denver was extremely thin, already having gone through Lendale White and Justin Fargas during the preseason, and with injury concerns with Correll Buckhalter. Maroney would be the likely replacement should Moreno go down again, but Moreno looked good Sunday.
Fred Taylor is now the unquestioned man in New England. The only question is if he can stay healthy.
