Giants have decreased RB Saquon Barkley's workload as of late

Giants rookie running back Saquon Barkley didn't take a single rep on Saturday after individual warmups, and has had his workload decreased significantly over the past several practices, ahead of Thursday night's NFL preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns.

Prior to Monday's practice, Shurmur put to bed any concern that Barkley had suffered an injury that led to a reduction in practice snaps.

"We're managing workloads," Shurmur said. "We take a good look at what they're doing. He's fine, if that's what you're asking, he's physically fine."

Related players: Wayne Gallman, Jonathan Stewart

Fantasy Impact:

The story said Saturday's rest was the third day in a row Barkley didn't take a majority of the first-team snaps. HC Pat Shurmur said the team does a lot of behind-the-scenes work and Barkley has looked great and doesn't look like a rookie. Gallman and Stewart took a lot of the first-team reps with Barkley out. Despite the signing of Stewart, Gallman is the favorite to be the backup to Barkley, according to a story we posted a few weeks ago.

Giants Beat: RB Wayne Gallman has inside track as change-of-pace RB

"Entering his second NFL season, Wayne Gallman has the inside track for the job as a change of pace complement to Saquon Barkley, who will rarely come off the field. Gallman has some burst and elusiveness in the open-field, but it is his ability to make plays as a receiver that will give him the leg-up on spelling Barkley over the likes of Jonathan Stewart and Robert Martin," wrote Matt Lombardo recently on NJ.com.

Fantasy Impact:

The story went on to say Stewart has "looked more like a plodding veteran running back trying to hang on," and the author questions how much he has left in the tank. The thought seems to be Stewart is more of a veteran presence in the locker room at this point as opposed to a back who can carry a significant workload. For those drafting Barkley, this may be a tidbit to remember.

Panthers Beat: Team to count on RB Christian McCaffrey more

WRAL

Christian McCaffrey will have an even bigger role in the Panthers' offense this season.

McCaffrey, the team's first-round draft pick in 2017, carried the ball 117 times for 435 yards and established a franchise rookie record with 80 receptions. He finished the season with seven touchdowns.

While McCaffrey led the Panthers in receptions, he'll be counted on to carry the ball more after the team parted ways with its all-time leading rusher Jonathan Stewart. Panthers two-time NFL Coach of the Year Ron Rivera believes McCaffrey is up to the task, saying he can be a running back who carries the ball 200 times this season.

Related players: C.J. Anderson

Fantasy Impact:

McCaffrey's size was always a question mark, but the story added Rivera commented, "Yeah, why not," to the prospect of McCaffrey carrying the ball 200 times. Anderson will surely factor into the offense, but it sounds like the team has seen enough of McCaffrey to give him a bigger role this year.

Rivera: Panthers RB Cameron Artis-Payne will have the 'opportunity' to replace Jonathan Stewart

Ron Rivera said Cameron Artis-Payne "will most certainly get that opportunity" to replace Jonathan Stewart as the power back.

Fantasy Impact:

In his four career games where he's carried the ball at least 10 times, Artis-Payne has averaged 74 total yards and 0.75 touchdowns on 15.8 touches per game (including 14.5 rushing attempts and a 4.05 yards per carry average). The Panthers may add a runner in the draft, so the Panthers' power back competition is something to monitor as the summer wears on.
