Scouting report

NE RB Jonas Gray - Week 19, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 19 vs Ravens
Since meeting a team meeting in Week 12, Gray saw only three carries over the next three games. He did total 17 carries in Weeks 16 and 17, to close out the season. This weekend Gray has to contend with fellow RBs Shane Vereen and LaGarrette Blount, as well as an opponent allowing the third fewest aFPA to RBs in the league. Gray makes for reasonable boom/bust lottery ticket option this weekend, but the risk with using him is not low.

NE RB Jonas Gray - Week 17, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs Bills
Encouragingly, Gray saw six touches in Week 16. A goal-line TD saved him on his way to a 6-5-1 line. With Vereen and Blount both dinged up, and with normal starters possibly resting a little bit extra this weekend, we're tenuously projecting Gray as the highest scoring New England RB in standard scoring leagues. We have him as RB28 and RB34 in PPR.

NE RB Jonas Gray - Week 16, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Jets
Gray made a reappearance in Week 15, in relief of a struggling LaGarrette Blount. He ran for an 11-62 line, adding 1-7 in the passing game. It was nice to see HC Bill Belichick hadn't forgotten Gray was capable of running the ball, as these were his first substantive carries since his monster of a game all the way back in Week 11. With impossible to predict usage, Blount ahead of him on the depth chart, and a tough aFPA matchup against the Jets, Gray shouldn't be in any lineups. We rank him as a desparation play only RB4, with a PPR downgrade into the RB5 conversation.

NE RB Jonas Gray - Week 13, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at Green Bay

After recording the best RB performance of the season in Week 11, Gray did not record a snap in Week 12. Gray slept through a team meeting and the Patriots signed LaGarrette Blount, but it mostly shows the frustration HC Bill Belichick offers fantasy owners.

With Blount effective and back in the mix, it will be tough to project Gray moving forward. He's capable of surprising any week, but we recommend leaving him on your benches for now. We rank him as RB49 and RB59 in standard. Zero snaps is just as likely as a big game.

NE RB Jonas Gray - Week 12, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs Detroit
The Patriots Week 11 affair could easily be renamed the "Jonas Gray show." Gray's utterly massive 38-199-4 line is the highest score for any RB game this season, in either scoring format. (An especially impressive feat given his lack of recording any receptions.)

Week 11 clearly show's Gray's ability, talent, and upside. However, I wrote last week that "Gray was a weekly boom/bust option," and that hasn't changed. While he reminded you last week he's worthy of being in your lineups, you should remember he'll continue to be a boom/bust option. We rank Gray as a mid to high-end RB3 depending on your league size, in standard. In PPR, we bump him down another tier.

NE RB Jonas Gray - Week 11, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at IND
Gray has turned into an admirable replacement for the injured Stevan Ridley. Much as Ridley, though, Gray's opportunities and fantasy scoring will ebb and flow as the opportunities arise (or don't arise). He expectedly struggled in a very tough matchup against the Broncos, but should find easier running room against the Colts. We're a little concerned if the game scripting will favor Gray or not in this one, so we have him ranked as RB29 & RB41 in PPR, putting him into flex consideration as bit of a boom/bust play.

NE RB Jonas Gray - Week 9, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 vs Denver
Gray looked very good for the Patriots last week, as he reprised the Stevan Ridley game-closer role in last week's blowout. His 17-86 line and over 5 YPC clip are both very promising signs for a player on the practice squad just two weeks ago. He looked great playing last week, but will suffer some of the same inconsistency Ridley did earlier in the year.

Gray has a tough matchup this weekend, with Denver offering stifling aFPA numbers to RBs. He's in the RB3/4 conversation, though, depending your league size. With the Week 9 bye blues upon us, he makes for a reasonable low-floor play with upside.
