LAC RB Isaiah Spiller - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Denver Broncos

A week after a 16-carry, 50-yard outing against the Raiders, Isaiah Spiller was allowed just two rush attempts and a single target against the Bills, giving him a whopping 5 yards from scrimmage.

Spiller's role should keep him off the fantasy radar in the season's final week, despite a matchup with the Broncos who rank 21st in aFPA to running backs this season.

LAC RB Isaiah Spiller - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Buffalo Bills

Isaiah Spiller set career highs with 16 rushes for 50 yards against the Raiders in Week 16, deeds which saw him earn a whopping 5.0 Half-PPR points. This bounty of fantasy points saw him finish as the RB45 for the week.

The Chargers offense does not look like a serious operation at present, and the prospect of going up against a fully armed and operational unit like the Bills does not make you think about fantasy points for peripheral players. Spiller is one such player. You do not need to start them in Week 16.

LAC RB Isaiah Spiller - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 at Arizona Cardinals

Isaiah Spiller played 16 snaps against the Chiefs in Week 11 and enjoyed six opportunities with four carries and two targets. He managed just 11 yards rushing and another 11 receiving and remained a long way behind Austin Ekeler in the scramble for plays for the Chargers.

The Cardinals rank 23rd in aFPA to running backs this season and have allowed eight rushing scores along with three receiving touchdowns to backs in 2022. But unless something happens to Ekeler, Spiller is unlikely to see enough work to make him fantasy relevant. You really don't need him in your lineups.

LAC RB Isaiah Spiller - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 vs Kansas City Chiefs

Isaiah Spiller did precious little of note in Week 10. He played only 10 snaps and carried the ball just four times for three yards. The next target he sees in the passing game will be his first.

The Chiefs rank 21st in aFPA to running backs this season, but Spiller is seeing so little work right now that it doesn't really matter how generous the opposition is. You don't need to start him this week, I promise you.

LAC RB Isaiah Spiller - Week 10 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 at San Francisco 49ers

Isaiah Spiller saw the most action of his rookie season in Week 9, carrying the ball seven times for 29 yards. He did not receive a target in the passing game and only played 13 snaps in total. Spiller managed 2.9 Half PPR points and finished as the RB43.

Spiller doesn't present the appearance of a player that fantasy managers NEED to start in Week 10. The 49ers rank fourth in aFPA to running backs this season. They've allowed the fewest rushing yards to running backs and are yet to allow a receiving touchdown to a tailback. Plus, having to compete with Austin Ekeler for work in the backfield is not a way to fantasy glory. Spiller doesn't need to be in your lineups this week.

LAC RB Isaiah Spiller - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
Following the 2022 NFL Draft, NFL Network analyst Bucky Brooks made a list of his favorite selections in draft order. Brooks took 10 players and explained why they are "perfect fits" for their respective teams. One of Brooks' picks was Isaiah Spiller. Brooks went on to explain Spiller is a dynamic runner with the size, speed, and big-play potential to occupy a lead role for a team that needs more pop from the running game. If Spiller is capable of handling the responsibilities of being the lead back, it would enable Austin Ekeler -- who is tied for 21st in the NFL in yards per carry (4.48) in the two seasons since he became the Bolts' top ball-carrier -- to reprise his role as a change-of-pace weapon in the rotation. Spiller is known for his ability to find the hole and as an efficient pass-catcher. Since 2019, he led the SEC with 2,993 rushing yards, including 1,844 rushing yards after contact, which also led the conference. In a position group that also includes Joshua Kelley and Larry Rountree III, Spiller could be thrown into the mix early in his rookie season. With more diversity at running back, the Chargers could attack opponents with a multi-faceted offense that alleviates some of the pressure on Justin Herbert and Co. to carry the load with the passing game.

2022 Fantasy Downside
Ekeler is really good. And even if the Chargers want to lighten his load as a rusher, Ekeler will still command a vast majority of the backfield snaps here.

2022 Bottom Line
While Spiller could emerge as the change of pace to Ekeler the Chargers have been looking for, Spiller could turn into a league winner if something happens to the starter.
