Isaac Redman, Jonathan Dwyer and Dwayne Wright all bulled into the end zone to give the offense a 3-2 advantage in the goal line drill during Steelers camp. The defense responded with back-to-back stops to claim bragging rights on the day that featured the first live hitting of training camp.
Four running backs got carries, and Frank Summers may have gotten a crack during the goal-line drill had he not missed practice because of a concussion. Tomlin also said that starting running back Rashard Mendenhall is "absolutely" a candidate to be the Steelers' short-yardage back.
In addition to Tyree's release, the Giants put defensive tackle Jay Alford on injured reserve. Alford underwent surgery yesterday to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Another defensive tackle, Jeremy Clark, was waived injured (ankle).
Tight end Michael Matthews, who played in all 37 regular season and postseason games the previous two years, was traded to New England for a conditional draft choice.
The 17 players waived today by the Giants were quarterbacks Andre' Woodson and Rhett Bomar; running back Allen Patrick; fullback Dwayne Wright; offensive linemen Terrence Pennington, Orrin Thompson and Cliff Louis; wide receiver Shaun Bodiford; defensive linemen Maurice Evans, Tommie Hill, Robert Henderson and Anthony Bryant; linebacker Kenny Ingram; cornerback DeAndre Wright; and safeties Travonti Johsnon, Vince Anderson and Sha'reff Rashad.
