Scouting report

DEN QB Drew Lock - 2020 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
After suffering a thumb injury during preseason, it took a while before Drew Lock took over for the Broncos, as he didn’t make his regular season debut until December. During the five games he started with the team, he went 4-1, with Lock completing 64% of his passing for just over 1,000 yards with seven TDs and three INTs. His best game came in Week 14 at Houston when he tossed for over 300 yards and three scores. Drafted as a gunslinger who likes to take risks, the second-year pro has a strong arm and, with the Broncos drafting Jerry Jeudy and K.J. Hamler in the first two rounds, is now surrounded by loads of talent.

Fantasy Downside
Lock has only the five games of experience and a limited offseason, so don’t be surprised if he still plays like a rookie during the ’20 season. He threw for less than 210 yards in four of his five outings, averaging just 6.5 yards per attempt. While the projected starting WR corps is blessed with speed, it is very young, with a couple rookies and the No. 1 option, Courtland Sutton, entering his third year.

Bottom Line
There are high expectations for Lock and the Broncos offense with new OC Pat Shurmur, who last season helped rookie QB Daniel Jones pass for over 3,000 yards and 24 TDs in 13 games. The youngster will be helped by what should be a solid running attack with Melvin Gordon and Phillip Lindsay. Even though the Denver offense is anticipated to be better this year, Lock is a still a second tier QB option with most of his upside coming in keeper leagues.

DEN QB Drew Lock - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Oakland Raiders
Last week versus the Lions, Drew Lock completed 76% of his passes for 192 yards and a touchdown. While his longest completion went for only 20 yards, he did a good job of managing the game after the Broncos were behind by multiple scores in the first half. In his four career contests, Lock is averaging 211 yards through the air and has tossed for six scores. In Week 1 at Oakland, Joe Flacco threw for nearly 270 yards and a TD in a losing effort. Look for another game-managing role for the rookie in the rematch, making Lock still a QB2 play.

DEN QB Drew Lock - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Detroit Lions
After two good games to start his career, Drew Lock found things a bit tougher on the road in the snow against Kansas City. In the loss, he finished with only a 45% completion rate and just over 200 yards, as the Broncos offense struggled to move the ball all game. Lock will be back at home, and the weather should be good on Sunday. Last week the Lions defense was torched by Jameis Winston and are now second to last at defending the pass. However, the rookie is still just a QB2 play.

DEN QB Drew Lock - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Kansas City Chiefs
What a great second professional game Drew Lock posted last week at Houston. In the easy win, he became the first rookie to pass for at least 300 yards and three TDs in his first road affair. In his first two contests, Lock has tossed for five scores, with four different pass catchers accounting for those touchdowns. Joe Flacco struggled versus the Chiefs in October, throwing for just 213 yards and getting sacked eight times, but this has looked like a much different Broncos team with Lock at the helm. However, he still should be used as just a QB2 play versus the No. 12 ranked pass defense.

DEN QB Drew Lock - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Houston Texans
In his NFL debut last Sunday versus the Chargers, Drew Lock threw both of his TDs to Courtland Sutton in the first quarter. After the hot start, he was able to manage the game the rest of the way, finishing with a 64% completion rate, 134 yards through the air and 15 rushing yards. The second-round pick will have the entire week to work exclusively with the first team but has a road matchup in a hostile environment. Despite Houston having the fifth-worst pass defense Lock is a QB2 option in just his second pro game.

DEN QB Drew Lock - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. Los Angeles Chargers
After spending the first 12 weeks of his career on IR due to a sprained thumb, Drew Lock should make his pro debut on Sunday at home versus a good Chargers pass defense. While the Broncos, and their fans, are eager to see what the rookie can do, now that the bye weeks have passed there are plenty of better options available to start than Lock. He is roster worthy only in keeper leagues.

DEN QB Drew Lock - 2019 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Despite dropping to the second round of the draft, Drew Lock ended up in a good spot. He can redshirt his rookie season with the Broncos, learning the NFL game from veteran Joe Flacco. In his four-year career at the University of Missouri, Lock showed great arm strength and threw for over 12,000 yards with 99 TDs and only 39 INTs. Similar to Flacco, he’s a big QB, at 6’4” and 228 pounds.

Fantasy Downside
Accuracy has been a bit of an issue for Lock. During his first three years at Missouri, he completed just 54% of his passes but was able to increase that to 63% his senior season. The year off to watch should help him observe, as he tended to struggle with pressure and had tough games versus big-time defenses such as Georgia and Alabama.

Bottom Line
Lock will battle for the backup role during training camp and likely won’t see the field much, if at all, during his rookie season. He has good upside, but there’s no reason he should be drafted, unless you’re part of an extreme-level keeper league. When given the chance to play, he will be an asset to the vertical passing attack. Lock has been called a boom or bust prospect.
