Without even being prompted, Cowboys coach Wade Phillips defended his placekicker. David Buehler has missed two of his four field-goal attempts this season, and he missed four in practice Wednesday before the media's access period ended.

On Thursday, Buehler did not kick during the 30 minutes the media is allowed to watch practice.

"As far as our field-goal kicker, you go out and you watch a few kicks and decide whether a guy can kick or not. It's really not how we do it," Phillips said. "I mean, the guy kicks over a hundred balls a week, and we have every one of those filmed, and he's working to try to get better as we're working.

Fantasy Impact: 

This is a fantasy situation worth avoiding. There are enough kickers usually available that do not need any protection from the media.

Kicker David Buehler has job security, at least for now.

He hooked a 44-yard field goal attempt with 7:28 left in the fourth quarter that would have tied the game. He made a 28-yard field goal in the third quarter and a 48-yarder with 1:17 left in the fourth, but the Cowboys could not recover the onside kick.

"I look at him the way i look at our team,'' Phillips said. "He was two out of three. That's about what we were. I've been around kickers. You've got to give them time.''

David Buehler was going to be on the Dallas Cowboys this season, even if it was only to keep whacking kickoffs deep into the end zone.

Now the Cowboys feel good about him kicking field goals, too.

After not getting a chance for two weeks, Buehler made kicks from 51, 45 and 40 yards - all with plenty of room to spare - then nailed a 31-yarder as time expired to lift the Cowboys past the Miami Dolphins 27-25 in the preseason finale Thursday night.

"We've got us a kicker!" crowed Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, hoping to avoid a repeat of last year's woes.

"What a game he had," added Dallas coach Wade Phillips. "No matter what you say, the last kick to win the game is pressure in any game. I think that inspired our whole football team."

Fantasy Impact: 

At least we know the Dallas kicking situation has worked itself out. Across the ball, Jake Long , the Dolphins starting left tackle, left with a knee injury.

The Cowboys have three practices left in the next two days before breaking camp for Houston on Friday.

Cowboys Kicker David Buehler attempted field goals and went 6-for-7. He was wide right from 33 yards. Buehler went 3-for-7 last Thursday and didn't attempt any field goals in the San Diego game, but still worked on the side. Buehler unofficially made kicks from 20, 31 twice, 35, 38 and 39.
