Scouting report

ARI TE Darren Fells - Week 15, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Philadelphia
Darren Fells had three catches for 43 yards last week against the Vikings. The Cardinals don’t really emphasize the use of the tight end position in their offense, and Fells has been lackluster as a fantasy option all season. He has a little upside this week against an Eagles pass defense that has allowed the second most passing touchdowns to opposing offenses this year. However, Fells is too inconsistent to trust, and the Eagles, while woeful against the pass, have been surprisingly effective against the tight end position. Only three of the 29 touchdowns they’ve given up have been to opposing tight ends. Fells should be left on waivers in all leagues.

ARI TE Darren Fells - Week 8, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 at Cleveland
Darren Fells was a surprise inactive last week against the Ravens as he nurses a shoulder injury, which gave way to Jermaine Gresham to get the start. While Gresham played well in his stead, neither player is a particularly strong fantasy option for owners looking for TE help, and both should be avoided in all formats for the time being.

ARI TE Darren Fells - Week 7, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs. Baltimore
Darren Fells caught one of the two passes thrown his way last week for just nine yards. The tight end position has not been featured in Arizona, and the limited targets that are available have been split between Fells, Troy Niklas and veteran Jermaine Gresham. While Fells is still the starter, it’s unlikely he suddenly turns a corner and becomes a viable fantasy option, and fantasy owners should leave him on waivers for the time being.

ARI TE Darren Fells - Week 6, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Philadelphia

Darren Fells had a touchdown last week in a blowout win over the Detroit Lions, but was only targeted twice all day and ended up with 25 yards. The tight end position has not been featured prominently in Arizona under Bruce Arians, and it would be unreasonable to expect that to change any time soon.

This week, Fells has a nice matchup against the Steelers, who gave up a pair of touchdowns and nine catches to Antonio Gates on Monday night. However, with all due respect to Fells, he’s not Antonio Gates. Even with a nice matchup, it’s too risky for fantasy owners to count on the Cardinals tight end, and Fells should remain on waivers in most leagues.

ARI TE Darren Fells - Week 5, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Detroit

Darren Fells caught the only pass thrown his way last week against the Rams and finished the day with 17 yards. He’s an afterthought in the Cardinals offense most weeks, and while he has a nice matchup against the Detroit Lions struggling defense this week, it’s hard to recommend starting Fells in fantasy leagues. There should be better players available on the waiver wire who stand a better chance to be featured a bit more in the offense.

ARI TE Darren Fells - Week 4, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. St. Louis
Darren Fells got the bulk of the work at the tight end position last week against the 49ers over Jermaine Gresham, but ended up with only one catch for 13 yards. Fells is used for both blocking and receiving, and the Cardinals have three talented receivers, making it difficult for the tight end to make much of a fantasy impact in their offense. Expect Fells to continue to battle Gresham for snaps and targets and to continue to take a back seat to the receiving corps, making him a risky fantasy option. He should remain on waivers for the time being.

ARI TE Darren Fells - Week 3, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. San Francisco

Darren Fells wasn’t targeted last week against the Bears, but he was in on 75 percent of the snaps for the Cardinals as they demolished Chicago 48-23. Fells is getting the most playing time out of the Arizona tight ends, and while his Week 2 fantasy goose egg is a poor sign for his fantasy potential, he still seems to have a hold on the starting job over Jermaine Gresham.

This week, Fells will face a 49ers defense that looked great against the Vikings in Week 1, but then looked horrible against the Steelers last Sunday. In all likelihood, that defense is probably somewhere in between the two outings. Still, Fells’ presence as a possibly fantasy relevant player is still new, and as a guy hovering in and out of the top 20 on our board, he’s not a tight end worth inserting in your starting lineup for the time being.
