MIN RB Dalvin Cook - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 vs. Arizona Cardinals
Dalvin Cook is coming off a slow game usage-wise, but he did manage to get in the end zone to salvage his day and record a RB2 finish back in Week 6. The primary concern for Cook moving forward is his continuing lack of passing game usage. Cook only ran 10 routes in Week 6 and saw a single target. At this point, Cook only has five targets in his last four games combined. This deterioration in receiving usage has lowered Cook's fantasy floor substantially to the point where he is probably best thought of as a high-end RB2 moving forward. The Vikings get a good overall matchup against Arizona this week, but it should be noted that the Cardinals' strength on defense is stopping opposing running backs. Cook is best deployed as a RB2 this week, but he is still a locked-in fantasy starter despite some disappointing weeks this season.

MIN RB Dalvin Cook - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Miami Dolphins
Our Week 5 write-up for Dalvin Cook suggested positive touchdown regression could be coming for Cook in the near future based on his usage and that's exactly what we got Sunday. Cook scored twice on the ground and racked up 121 total yards on 20 touches in his best game of the season. The Vikings are throwing more this year as was expected, but Cook is still seeing a ton of work and getting goal line carries. Cook's limited receiving production in recent weeks is not a concern quite yet as he has still run the eighth most routes of any RB and saw 11 targets in Weeks 1-2. Miami ranks near the bottom of the league in adjusted fantasy points allowed to RBs, meaning another big game could be on deck for Cook in Week 6.

MIN RB Dalvin Cook - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Chicago Bears
Dalvin Cook's playing time and usage metrics all suggest he is due for some positive regression in the box score in coming weeks. Amongst running backs, Cook ranks 8th in snap share, 8th in carries, and 6th in routes run, yet he only has one total touchdown in four games and ranks 21st in targets and 34th in receiving yards. Cook is still on the field a ton, he is just not getting many high-value opportunities so far, especially in the passing game. Despite the slow start, Cook is due for a breakout with his heavy workload and the Vikings offense generally being productive for the first month of the season. Week 5 presents a great opportunity for the breakout game with the Bears and their below-average run defense coming to town. Cook should be fired up as a RB1 in fantasy leagues with eyes on some serious positive regression coming in the touchdown department in the near future.

MIN RB Dalvin Cook - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. New Orleans Saints (London)
Dalvin Cook is dealing with a nagging shoulder issue that has bothered him for much of his career but has never kept him out for an extended period of time. After not practicing Wednesday, Cook returned to the field on Thursday and looks set to play through the pain on Sunday morning in London. Cook is still seeing great usage, as he is currently eighth amongst RBs in snap share, 12th in carries, and sixth in routes run out of the backfield. Even so, Cook's box score production has not been great so far, in large part due to his lack of realized involvement in the passing game. Despite running a bunch of routes, Cook only has seven receptions in three games and his flimsy 10% target share is keeping him from reaching his ceiling. That being said, Minnesota should have some positive regression offensively after two slow games and Cook will surely be a large part of that. Monitor Minnesota's injury report this weekend to verify Cook is good to go, but if he is active he is still a RB1 play in fantasy against an average New Orleans defense.

MIN RB Dalvin Cook - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Detroit Lions
Despite receiving elite usage, Dalvin Cook is off to a slow start in 2022 as the Vikings aired it out in Week 1 and then were dominated by the Eagles in Week 2, resulting in a game script that did not allow for Cook to excel statistically. Cook has played nearly 70% of Minnesota's offensive snaps, has 11 targets through two games, and has run the fourth most routes of any running back at 47. Despite this excellent usage, Cook ranks 29th at the position with 10.7 fantasy PPG to start the year due to him only logging 26 carries over the first two weeks of the season. Cook's middling fantasy production can't last with that type of usage if the offense produces, and Week 3 is a prime bounce back spot with the Vikings hosting the Lions and their shootout-prone defense. Cook is bound to see some positive regression in the comings weeks, and the great matchup against Detroit makes him a clear RB1 in fantasy and a prime buy-low candidate heading into Week 3.

MIN RB Dalvin Cook - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Philadelphia Eagles
Dalvin Cook's rather pedestrian Week 1 box score is more the result of Justin Jefferson torching the Packers through the air than any bad play or usage issues for Cook. Cook still averaged 4.5 YPC over 20 carries on Sunday, and he caught three of his five targets. Even if you were disappointed by Cook's Week 1 performance, the fact of the matter is there are not many backs in the league who have a reasonable chance of logging 20+ carries and 5+ targets in a game. Kevin O'Connell's new-look offense leaned on the pass in Week 1, but the incredible efficiency shown by Minnesota against Green Bay will no doubt trickle down to Cook sooner rather than later if it sticks throughout the season. The only thing missing from Cook's Week 1 performance was a touchdown, and those are surely on the way. Cook is again a strong RB1 in Week 2 against an Eagles defense that struggled to contain D'Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams this past Sunday.

MIN RB Dalvin Cook - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Green Bay Packers
Dalvin Cook will start off 2022 against a solid Packers defense that finished just better than league average in adjusted fantasy points allowed to RBs (19.0 PPG in half-PPR) last season. While the matchup is not ideal, Cook remains one of the premier workhorse backs in the league and will occupy an exciting role in new Head Coach Kevin O'Connell's modernized offensive scheme. While a reduction in carries may appear to be a downside for Cook, fewer touches between the tackles in exchange for more targets in space could benefit him and his history of durability problems in the long run. The tough matchup means Cook may not hit his ceiling this week, but he remains a no-doubt RB1 in fantasy and should be started with confidence in all leagues.
