GB WR Christian Watson - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 vs. Minnesota Vikings

Christian Watson struggled again, as did the whole Packers passing offense, against the Broncos. Watson had five targets for 3 catches for 27 yards. A disappointing day against a beatable secondary, even if Patrick Surtain is there. On the plus side, Watson led the Packers in routes and targets, but he wasn't able to parlay that into a useable fantasy day.

The matchup against the Vikings should be good as well, but who knows where this Packers passing attack is on any given week. Watson is a WR3 this week, but a touchdown could give him the upside of a WR2. You can't really bench him, but he's not exactly reliable.

GB WR Christian Watson - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 at Denver Broncos/strong>

Christian Watson was slowly worked back into the offense in the two games before the bye, so we should hopefully see him fully unleashed in this game against the Broncos. While the Broncos are easier to run on than pass, it's still a solid spot for Watson and the pass-catchers.

Watson is a borderline WR2 this week and given he likely won't see shadow coverage from Patrick Surtain he should find opportunities for a big play. His game-breaking ability can come from anywhere and that's why in a solid matchup he should be started confidently in all formats.

GB WR Christian Watson - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Las Vegas Raiders

Christian Watson was on a snap count last week against the Lions and while he only ran a route on 47 percent of snaps, he did still manage to find the end zone in his season debut. He was limited in practice again this week, but should hopefully see more snaps this week against the Raiders.

While the Raiders are 5th against receivers so far this season, Watson should still be considered a WR3 this week with the ability to potentially put up a WR2 week if the routes really ramp up this week.

GB WR Christian Watson - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Detroit Lions

Christian Watson is expected to make his debut this season on Thursday Night Football against Detroit after nearly getting back last week and logging limited practices so far this week. It will be interesting to see how Watson fits in after seeing the emergence of Jayden Reed and Romeo Doubs continuing to see targets in the red zone.

Watson is a borderline WR3/Flex this week based on our rankings, but the matchup against Detroit is a great one to return to. The Lions are 22nd against wide receivers in aFPA and you drafted Watson as a WR 2/3 and should consider him one this week.

GB WR Christian Watson - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. New Orleans Saints

Christian Watson could be in line to make his season debut this weekend against the Saints after logging a limited practice on Wednesday. He was held out of practice on Thursday as part of the plan according to head coach Matt LaFleur. Assuming he gets back on the field Friday, Watson could be in line to play.

GB WR Christian Watson - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Chicago Bears

Christian Watson has logged back-to-back DNPs at practice this week with a hamstring injury. It's unfortunately looking less likely he'll be able to give it a go this week, but. even a limited session on Friday could be enough to play on Sunday. If Watson is unable to go, it'll be a slight downgrade for Jordan Love while locking Jayden Reed and Romeo Doubs into two receiver sets. Malik Heath looks like the potential replacement in three receiver sets.

UPDATE: Christian Watson has been ruled out for Sunday.

If Watson is able to suit up, it wasn't a great matchup last year according to aFPA (11th against WR) and not being 100 percent I'd cautiously start him. It's extremely risky, but if he's able to go, and reports are that he won't be limited, it would be tough to sit him, but lower expectations to a WR3/Flex-type week. Be sure to check back for updated injury reports.

GB WR Christian Watson - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
The fantasy upside with Christian Watson was on display in Weeks 7-10 last season when he averaged 22.9 fantasy points per game (in Half-PPR scoring). Watson averaged an incredible 2.5 yards per route run last season, which was tied for seventh in the league. He was highly efficient with the ball in his hands, he also added 7 carries for 80 yards and 2 touchdowns on the season as well. We could easily see his role expand, but if it he just maintains the role he saw in the second half of the season, seeing close to seven targets per game, his efficiency should be able to maintain a level of success.

Fantasy Downside
The downside to Watson is that he might be getting drafted at his ceiling. His current ADP (40.9 and WR21) is quite high for a player on the extremes of efficiency and on an offense breaking in a new quarterback. If Jordan Love doesn’t live up to moderate expectations, the pass volume will likely drop and he won’t be able to thrive on efficiency alone. The Packers could also just run even more with their two-headed monster at RB even if Love is playing well.

2023 Bottom Line
There are paths to “failure” at his ADP, but his upside seems immense given what he was able to do as a rookie coming from a small school in North Dakota State. His drops are a bit worrying at 10%, which was tied for seventh in the league, but Matt LaFleur showed a willingness to get creative with his young playmaker last year. Draft at cost.
