Fantasy Upside
Ben Watson set or matched career highs across the board last season with the Saints, catching 74 passes for 825 yards, and six touchdowns. Watson joins a Baltimore team dying to get some health and consistency from the tight end position, and he should stand a good chance to remain the starter if he can provide a reliable target for quarterback Joe Flacco. Watson blocks well and runs clean routes, even if he isn’t much of a burner. All in all, the Ravens targeted the tight end position 132 times last season and should continue to throw the ball again this year.
Fantasy Downside
Watson is 35 years old now and he’ll have to adjust to a new system and a new quarterback after spending the last three years with the Saints. He also has to stave off competition from 2014 second-round pick Maxx Williams and the athletic Crockett Gillmore for his job. Gillmore had 412 yards and four touchdowns last season and he won’t give up easily. Dennis Pitta, now seemingly healthy, is still in the mix as well.
2016 Bottom Line
All in all, it’s hard to get too excited about any Raven tight ends. Baltimore led the league with 676 pass attempts in 2015, so Watson could thrive if he wins the job outright. However, he’s got too many talented players looking over his shoulder and coming off a career year at age 35 doesn’t inspire a tremendous amount of confidence. He’s a streaming option in most leagues, with very little draft value.
Update: Watson tore his Achilles in the pre-season and is expected to miss the entire 2016 season. Even in dynasty leagues, he should be avoided.
