Scouting report

HOU RB Arian Foster - Week 5, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Indianapolis
In his 2015 debut, Arian Foster was used sparingly, but that may have been due to how far behind the Texans were. Of course, Foster’s second quarter fumble returned for a touchdown contributed to the large deficit. Arian finished with 10 yards on eight rushes and also caught three passes for 25 yards. Even with the short week and limited recovery time for his groin, Foster is back and should be a permanent part of your starting lineup, especially against a Colts defense yielding 120 yards per game on the ground.

HOU RB Arian Foster - Week 4, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Atlanta
Arian Foster has been practicing this week and could be in the Texans lineup on Sunday. The ground game was able to plow through the Buccaneers for 186 yards in the win Week 3, and Atlanta is coming off of a game in which it allowed four rushing TDs to the Cowboys. As long as he’s cleared to play, Foster needs to be added to your fantasy starting lineup.

HOU RB Arian Foster - 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Arian Foster, who turns 29 in August, was as good as ever last season, rushing for 1,246 yards and eight touchdowns on a healthy 4.8 yards per carry average. He added 38 receptions for 327 yards and five touchdowns. All told, Foster had 298 touches over 13 games. Playing in what's almost certain to be a run-first offense once again in Houston, there's only one thing standing between Foster and another huge season (see below).

Fantasy Downside
In explaining his plan to “manage” Foster’s workload this season, Texans head coach Bill O’Brien told reporters: “Arian is a very talented guy in a lot of phases. He can run the ball, he can catch the ball, he’s a good pass protector, he’s a smart football player, but you’ve got to manage him. How do you manage that? You manage him in practice. You manage him in the games.” But he did miss three games, and O’Brien is quick to acknowledge that. “I think any time a player reaches that age of 30 or close to that age of 30, and you know that the guy can still play, you know that he is a very talented player,” the coach explained. “That’s something we’ll always take into account. We communicate with the player. We communicate with Arian. How are you feeling this week? What’s ailing you? Things like that. You take a lot of hits at running back in this league. I think we just continue to communicate with Arian and manage it. He’s got a lot of good football yet.”

Bottom Line
My feeling is fantasy owners should focus on that last sentence. Current ADP numbers -- Foster is going off the board as RB6 -- suggest they already are. There will be better bargains later in your draft, but Foster's status as a anchor back on your fantasy roster is well-deserved.

UPDATEFoster suffered a groin injury on Aug. 3 that will reportedly require surgery. Houston Chronicle staffer John McClain reports that Foster won't miss the entire season, but fantasy owners should back off until further details come to light.

HOU RB Arian Foster - Week 17, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 – Arian Foster vs. Jacksonville Jaguars
Although he was bothered by a sore hip heading in to last week’s game with Baltimore, Arian Foster finished with 96 yards on 25 carries. He also caught a 23 yards pass and threw a TD to TE C.J. Fiedorowicz. Arian has over 1,300 rushing yards and 12 total scores this season. Just three weeks ago against the Jaguars, he ran for 127 yards and a TD. Without a doubt you’re starting Foster.

HOU RB Arian Foster - Week 16, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 – Arian Foster vs. Baltimore Ravens
Arian Foster ran for 99 yards on 26 carries and caught three passes for 18 more yards in the loss at the Colts last Sunday. With Ryan Fitzpatrick leaving with a broken leg, the Texans relied on the running game to keep them close, as Tom Savage took over the QB duties. Foster has had a great season and will be utilized to take some pressure off of Case Keenum, who was just re-signed last week. However, he's been slowed in practice this week due to a hip injury and is listed as questionable. The Ravens defense has been solid against the run, but there’s no way you can leave Foster on your bench during the fantasy playoffs, assuming he's healthy enough to play.

HOU RB Arian Foster - Week 15, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 – Arian Foster vs. Indianapolis Colts
In the win over the Jags last Sunday, it was just another average Arian Foster afternoon – 24 carries, 127 yards and a TD – his 12th total score of ‘14. He’s been over the century mark in seven of the nine full contests he’s played in this season. Arian totaled 141 yards and two TDs in the first meeting with Indy this season and, no doubt, should continue to be in your starting lineup.

HOU RB Arian Foster - Week 14, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 – Arian Foster vs. Jacksonville Jaguars
After missing the previous two games with a sore groin, Arian Foster was back on the field last week in the win over Tennessee. He didn’t show any effects from the injury, running for 79 yards on 19 carries and catching five passes for 26 yards and a TD. Alfred Blue and Jonathan Grimes combined to receive 12 rushing attempts in the blowout victory. Arian should be fine moving forward and has a great matchup at Jacksonville this week. Go ahead and keep on starting Foster with no hesitations.
