Scouting report

IND QB Anthony Richardson - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Houston Texans

Anthony Richardson looked pretty good in his first career regular season start, putting up 223 yards, a touchdown, and a pick in a loss to the Jaguars. Most notably, he had 10 carries for 40 yards and a touchdown on the ground, finishing as the QB5 in fantasy scoring. While he was banged up during the game and will need to find a way to limit the bone-crushing hits he endured against Jacksonville, the future looks bright for the rookie.

This week, Richardson faces a Houston defense that held Lamar Jackson to just 6.6 fantasy points in Week 1. Houston is a bit of a wild card, as they have a new defensive-minded coach and were in a lot of negative game-script situations a year ago. Still, they were ranked first in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks in 2022 and held Lamar down in a loss on Sunday. Richardson should still be considered a quality starting option due to his demonstrated rushing production, but keep an eye on this Houston defense and how it shapes out as the season progresses. We have Richardson ranked as a top-five option.

IND QB Anthony Richardson - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

Anthony Richardson is far from a polished product, completing just 53.8% of his passes during his final season at Florida and throwing nine interceptions to his 17 touchdowns in 12 games. However, he ran for 654 yards and nine scores as well, and his incredible athleticism is what makes him an intriguing fantasy option.

Richardson starts his career against the Jaguars, who were 26th in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks, but do have a couple of potentially fearsome pass-rushers. Richardson is a risky option. It’s a first-year quarterback with a first-time head coach, missing the offense’s best weapon in Jonathan Taylor. Still, the potential rushing production should raise his fantasy floor and increases his ceiling considerably. We have him ranked as a fringe-QB1 option with upside this week.

IND QB Anthony Richardson - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Anthony Richardson was an uneven performer at Florida, throwing for 2,549 yards, 17 touchdowns, and nine interceptions in his final season last year, and completing just 53.8% of his passes. However, Richardson also ran for 654 yards and nine touchdowns and his athleticism is off the charts. He has a huge arm, he’s 6-foot-4, 236 pounds, and ran a ridiculous 4.43-second 40-yard-dash at the combine. The Colts have been searching desperately for a quarterback since Andrew Luck retired following the 2018 season, so the opportunity is there for Richardson to seize the reins.

Fantasy Downside
Richardson isn’t guaranteed to start in Week 1. New coach Shane Steichen brought Gardner Minshew with him from Philadelphia, and Minshew should have the leg up on early playing time given his familiarity with the offense and his experience. Richardson could definitely win the job outright, but it’s not a given. Additionally, if the Colts start winning with Minshew in what could be a struggling AFC South division, we may not see Richardson at all this year.

2023 Bottom Line
Even if Richardson takes a long time to develop as a passer, he could still put up dynamite fantasy numbers with his legs. His ADP is the 11th round right now in 12-team formats, so the upside is probably worth the risk at that cost. Fantasy managers should plan to carry two quarterbacks into the season, however, at least until we know for sure Richardson is going to be taking the snaps in Week 1.

Update: Richardson has been named the starter. He's a risky option, but has tremendous upside with the expected rushing production he brings.
