Scouting report

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Detroit Lions
Alexander Mattison found the end zone last week against the Jets, but he was held to just 18 yards on five touches, including a pair of receptions. Mattison can put together solid fantasy performances when given the touches, but when Dalvin Cook is healthy, the best managers can hope for is a vultured touchdown like last week. That's a tall order for a player who received only 25% of the offensive snaps against New York. Mattison is one of the best insurance policies in the league, but he should remain on the bench and out of fantasy lineups while Cook remains active.

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - Week 10 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 at Buffalo Bills
Another week, another game of backup duties for Alexander Mattison. If anything, Mattison's involvement in the offense is shrinking (three touches on a 14% snap share in Week 9). He is not a fantasy asset outside of having contingency value in the event of a Dalvin Cook injury.

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 at Washington Commanders
Alexander Mattison vultured a touchdown from Dalvin Cook in Week 8, but overall only saw five carries and no targets in the passing game. Mattison will stumble his way across the goal line on occasion, but he does not see nearly enough work in the normal flow of a game to be fantasy relevant outside of being insurance for Cook's health.

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 vs. Arizona Cardinals
Alexander Mattison occupied his typical backup role in Week 6 when he played only 14% of the snaps and got one carry with no targets. Business as usual for Mattison. He is nothing but a bench stash in fantasy unless Dalvin Cook suffers an injury and misses time.

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Miami Dolphins
Alexander Mattison played 40% of the snaps in Week 5 and actually saw more targets than Dalvin Cook, but he still only totaled 40 scoreless yards on 12 touches. Mattison saw his best usage of the season in Week 5 but it's hard to see that continuing based on a one game sample. Cook continues to get the vast majority of the touches in Minnesota's backfield and that's not likely to change barring injury. Mattison is a bench stash but cannot be started for fantasy purposes.

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Chicago Bears
Alexander Mattison remains a valuable bench stash as an insurance policy against a Dalvin Cook injury, but he only has 12 touches over the last two games as he remains a strict backup. Mattison should be rostered in all leagues, but he cannot be started unless Cook goes down.

MIN RB Alexander Mattison - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
Alexander Mattison looks set for another season as Dalvin Cook's direct backup, and that position has had recent fantasy relevance due to Cook's propensity for picking up nagging injuries as he carries a massive workload for the Vikings. Mattison started four games last year and averaged over 26 touches per game in those weeks, showing himself to be a reliable RB1 whenever Cook is out. Cook isn't getting any younger and has never played a full NFL season, meaning it is very likely Mattison will start more games this year. Mattison remains one of the game's top "handcuff" backs and is a great source of upside for Zero-RB drafters looking for a lottery ticket.

2022 Fantasy Downside
Mattison will have no fantasy upside so long as Cook is fully healthy. In games where Cook was healthy last season, Mattison only received a handful of carries throughout the game as the quintessential "breather back" who gets just enough snaps to let the starter last the whole game. Mattison will not be playable in fantasy unless Cook suffers an injury. While Cook is likely to miss games at some point, there is no way to predict when that will be.

2022 Bottom Line
Mattison is most valuable to whoever drafts Cook and those who forego RBs in the early rounds in search of high-upside gambles in the later rounds of drafts. A player whose fantasy value depends so heavily on the health of another can only have so much fantasy appeal, but Mattison will likely contribute at some point and is one of the better gambles available later in drafts.
