Scouting report

LV QB Aidan O'Connell - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Indianapolis Colts

Aiden O’Connell was epically ineffective last week against a tough Chiefs defense, completing just nine of his 21 pass attempts for 62 yards. The Raiders defense won the day, however, and O’Connell will move on to the next matchup.

This week, O’Connell faces a Colts defense that ranks 10th in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks. The Colts have been a mercurial matchup all season, and O’Connell has been more merc than urial in his own right. Tread carefully in this matchup, which could yield some pretty ugly results. Consider O’Connell a fringe QB2 option.

LV QB Aidan O'Connell - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Kansas City Chiefs

Well that was fun! Aiden O’Connell tore apart the Chargers defense last Thursday night, throwing for four touchdowns and 248 yards in an extremely lopsided victory that resulted in the Chargers firing both their GM and Head Coach the next day. O’Connell has been a fun story, but it was only the first game of his young career with multiple touchdown passes, and the Chargers are a wreck defensively.

This week, expect less production against a stingy Chiefs defense that ranks 13th in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks. O’Connell rarely runs the ball, so he’ll have to rely on his arm to put up fantasy points, and it’s unlikely we see a repeat performance in a tougher matchup. We have him ranked outside of starting territory - even in 2QB formats - once again, despite his magical Week 15 performance.

LV QB Aidan O'Connell - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Los Angeles Chargers

Aiden O’Connell struggled along with the rest of the Las Vegas offense in a shutout loss to the Vikings last week, throwing for 171 yards and a pick. O’Connell has shown some flashes of competence in his tenure as the starter, but he certainly isn’t going to convince the Raiders to skip the position in the 2024 NFL draft.

This week, O’Connell faces a Chargers defense that ranks 23rd in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks. It’s a nice matchup, but O’Connell hasn’t shown he can put up huge fantasy numbers thus far, making it hard to trust him in lineups. Consider him a fringe QB2 option.

LV QB Aidan O'Connell - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. Minnesota Vikings

Don’t look now, but Aiden O’Connell doesn’t look like a terrible quarterback. He’s certainly not lighting the world on fire, but he’s won two of his last four starts and he kept the team competitive against the Dolphins and the Chiefs before the bye last week. Okay, he had three picks against Miami, but still! O’Connell has a long way to go for fantasy relevance, but he’s at least looking reasonably competent, which is a good sign in Las Vegas. Don’t start him against the Vikings this week - who rank fifth in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks - but keep monitoring his progress. In deep leagues, he could have some streaming potential in Week 15 against the Chargers.

LV QB Aidan O'Connell - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 vs. New York Giants

Aiden O’Connell’s first start didn’t go well earlier this season, and it’s hard to expect his second start to go much better. He has a tough matchup against the Giants this week. New York ranks fifth in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks and pass-rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux is a straight up monster on their defensive line. The Raiders just cleaned house and might already be looking to 2024, so fantasy managers should look elsewhere.
