GB RB Ty Montgomery - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs. San Francisco 49ers

With the Packers trailing last week, Ty Montgomery saw a team-best 29 snaps in the backfield last week. The bad news is that he got just five touches, four carries for 15 yards and one catch for 23. That's not enough work to use him even as a flex play this week. The 49ers have allowed 37 receptions to opposing running backs, so there's some hope there. But to use Montgomery as anything more than a low-end flex play would be a stretch.

GB RB Ty Montgomery - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Detroit Lions

Ty Montgomery had five carries for 18 yards and two receptions for 56 last week and could have a bigger role this week. Green Bay's receiving corps is banged up and Montgomery could wind up seeing some action in the slot. He's a guy who Aaron Rodgers trusts, so Montgomery could be a nice start as a flex play, especially in PPR leagues. Keep an eye on the injury report and react accordingly.

GB RB Ty Montgomery - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Buffalo Bills

Ty Montgomery led the Green Bay backs in touches last week with four carries for 16 yards and six receptions for another 48. But that was largely because the Packers were behind for the entire game. He actually only played 20 snaps, compared to 30 for Jamaal Williams and 17 for Aaron Jones. The Packers don't figure to be trailing in this game, despite the Bills sneaking up on Minnesota last week. None of the Green Bay backs should be used as anything but a flex play.

GB RB Ty Montgomery - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Washington Redskins

Ty Montgomery hasn't gotten much work thus far this season and that's unlikely to change with Aaron Jones now back. At this point, he's probably not going to get more than the five carries for 31 yards or one reception he had last week.

GB RB Ty Montgomery - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Minnesota Vikings

Ty Montgomery saw just four offensive touches that counted, catching two passes for 21 yards and two carries for seven yards. But he also had a 48-yard catch-and-run called back via penalty. With that little production, it's hard to recommend using Montgomery, even as a flex option.

GB RB Ty Montgomery - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Chicago Bears

Ty Montgomery figures to get 10 or so touches spelling Jamaal Williams, with at least half of that work coming in the passing game. That makes him much more valuable in PPR formats. That makes him a solid flex play but not much else until further notice.

GB RB Ty Montgomery - 2018 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Ty Montgomery remains an interesting matchup problem for opposing defenses, which is why the Packers are intent on using him in the backfield. He was the flavor of the year last season when it looked like he would be the unquestioned lead back. Can he be that guy who catches 10 passes in a game again, while also getting 10 rushes? Perhaps.

Fantasy Downside

Injuries wrecked Montgomery's 2017 season and you have to wonder if the converted receiver is cut out to be an every-down running back. And with talented second-year players Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones now in place, you wonder if he'll get that chance.

2018 Bottom Line

Montgomery should still get opportunities, especially with Jones suspended for the first two games of the season. But he's never going to be a guy who gets 20 touches on a consistent basis. This is a true running back-by-committee situation, which is never good for fantasy purposes. All three Green Bay backs are going in the same area of drafts, between rounds 8–11. Maybe one can catch fire and win the job outright, but that's doubtful. Montgomery will probably be the most valuable in PPR leagues, but that also counts on him staying healthy.

GB RB Ty Montgomery - Week 10 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 at Chicago Bears

Ty Montgomery got 5 carries for 33 yards and 1 catch for 18 yards last week, seeing action mostly on passing downs. That seems to be his role moving forward, which makes him a little more valuable in PPR leagues—assuming Brett Hundley can complete some passes. Aaron Jones is still going to get the bulk of the work on first and second downs. Montgomery might be useful as a flex play but little else at this point.

GB RB Ty Montgomery - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 vs. Detroit Lions

Without Aaron Rodgers, there's little respect for Green Bay's passing game. And that doesn't bode well for Ty Montgomery moving forward. He had just 4 carries for 6 yards two weeks ago against New Orleans and caught just 1 pass for 9 yards. He'll still play on passing downs, but Aaron Jones will get the work on first and second downs. Montgomery is a flex play.

GB RB Ty Montgomery - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs. New Orleans Saints

Ty Montgomery got 10 carries for 28 yards and 1 reception last week in his return to the lineup, getting four fewer touches than Aaron Jones. Perhaps better days are ahead, but right now this looks like timeshare. Montgomery remains the better option in PPR leagues, but the Packers could try to rely a little more on the running game to protect Brett Hundley. That makes both running backs nothing more than flex plays right now until we get some clarity.
