CHI TE Trey Burton - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Arizona Cardinals

Trey Burton had a decent outing last week, catching all four of his targets for 20 yards and a touchdown. So far he has just 35 yards in two games with Chicago, but if he keeps finding the end zone he'll prove to have some value in fantasy. The chances of him scoring this week seem high, considering the Cardinals have allowed a TD to a tight end in two straight games. We like Burton as a low-end TE1 option this week.

CHI TE Trey Burton - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Seattle Seahawks

There were some good things and some bad things to take away from Trey Burton's first game with the Bears. On the plus side, he played 87 percent of the team's offensive snaps and saw six targets (second on the team). However, on the bad side, he finished with just one catch for 15 yards.

Burton has talent, but we knew he'd be a somewhat risky option since he's never really been a full-time starter before. He wasn't great in Week 1, but don't give up hope on him. We still like him as a low-end TE1 option against the Seahawks in Week 2.

CHI TE Trey Burton - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Green Bay Packers

Trey Burton signed in Chicago as a free agent after spending his first four years with the Eagles. Fantasy owners have known Burton for a few years as he's had some decent games when he's been given the chance. However, Burton was often buried on the depth chart in Philadelphia.

Now, he's the clear-cut starter for the Bears, and should develop into a solid pass-catching threat. The TE market in fantasy is pretty shallow, so we have someone as talented as Burton putting up low-end TE1 numbers this week against the Packers.

CHI TE Trey Burton - 2018 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

Trey Burton was an intriguing option last year who showed signs of promise, but couldn’t really get on the field due to the Eagles’ abundance of tight ends. Burton comes to Chicago as the clear-cut starter in a promising Matt Nagy offense that made Travis Kelce into a star. Burton is more of a receiving threat than a blocking tight end threat, lining up in the slot on 37.5 percent of his snaps last season with the Eagles.

Fantasy Downside

While the hype is high on Burton, the fact of the matter is we’ve never seen what he can do in a starting role. Sure he looked good in spurts last season, but he only finished with 248 yards on 23 receptions. He’s never played more than 345 snaps in any of his four seasons, which brings in a question of durability, especially for a smaller player at this position.

2018 Bottom Line

There’s a lot to like about Burton in 2018. He’s athletic and in a good system with what appears to be a good quarterback. The stars are all aligned for success, but we haven’t seen it happen yet, so there’s definitely some risk. If everything works out, though, Burton should end up with TE1 numbers.

Super Bowl vs. New England Patriots

What matters in this different one-game format is not so much how many points we project each player for but how much each player costs per point. In FanDuel's half-point PPR format, here's how we value the tight ends, strictly in terms of dollar/FanDuel point: Rob Gronkowski>Zach Ertz>Trey Burton>Dwayne Allen.

As for DraftKings' full PPR scoring, here's how we value the tight ends in terms of dollar/DraftKings point: Zach Ertz>Trey Burton>Rob Gronkowski>Dwayne Allen.

PHI TE Trey Burton - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at New York Giants

Trey Burton exploded last week, but with Zach Ertz back healthy, he's nothing more than an Ertz handcuff. He's too risky to play unless Ertz is out in future weeks.

PHI TE Trey Burton - Week 3, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Pittsburgh
Tricky Trey Burton caught five balls for 49 yards and a TD last week. He was targeted seven times. Burton played for the injured Zach Ertz who has a displaced rib - and it looks like Ertz will miss Week 3 as well.

The Eagles like Burton's skillset and we reported he was a player to watch out for at some point this season. Even when Ertz is back the team is expected to use three-TE sets, so Burton will still have a role but likely not a major fantasy one. Burton is ranked just 20th this week, but it's a pretty good matchup against the Steelers who are 18th in allowing fantasy points to TEs. Given the Eagles may trail in this game, Burton could be a sneaky start. He played in just 43 percent of snaps in Week 2, but that may increase if the Eagles need to keep pace.
