CHI TE Trey Burton - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs. New Orleans Saints

Trey Burton has not had a strong start to 2019. His four starts have finished with stat lines of 2-5, 4-20, 2-16 and 3-16. He's averaging less than 15 yards per game and hasn't had five or more targets in any game this season. He's a weak option at tight end.

CHI TE Trey Burton - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Oakland Raiders

Trey Burton's 2019 hasn't been great. After sitting out Week 1, Burton has posted totals of 2-5, 4-20 and 2-16. He gets a great matchup against the Raiders this week as Oakland is allowing an average of 15.8 fantasy points per game to the position. But it's hard to recommend a player who hasn't had more than 20 receiving yards in a single game. He's not a bad sleeper option if you're desperate, but there should be better players available.

CHI TE Trey Burton - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Minnesota Vikings

Trey Burton saw four targets, and hauled them all in for 20 yards in Week 3. Burton now has 25 yards through two games, which would put him on pace for 187 total yards this season. We expect him to do more than that, but his start to the season isn't promising. Until he starts putting up some actual production, he'll remain a bad fantasy option.

CHI TE Trey Burton - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Washington Redskins

After sitting out Week 1, Trey Burton returned to the lineup in Week 2. He didn't appear to be fully ready, however, as he played just 43% of the offensive snaps. He had three targets, catching two passes for only five yards. Burton was one of the best fantasy options at TE a year ago, but he's still recovering. Coach Matt Nagy said earlier this week "it’ll take a little bit of time" to get Burton to full playing status. So until that happens, he's best left on the bench.

CHI TE Trey Burton - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Green Bay Packers

Trey Burton finished as the sixth-highest scoring tight end last season in his first full year as a starting option. He caught 54 passes for 569 yards and six touchdowns, which may not sound like much, but was a lot better than what most tight ends accomplished in 2018. We're expecting a very similar stat line for Burton in 2019, which would make him a low-end TE1 for the season.

As for Week 1, his status is a bit cloudy. Burton had a sports hernia surgery in the offseason and is currently dealing with a separate groin injury. Coach Matt Nagy said of the injury, end up being pretty much a game-time decision, "It’ll end up being pretty much a game-time decision." So even if Burton plays, he may not be full strength. He's not a strong play this week considering his ailment.

CHI TE Trey Burton - 2019 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Trey Burton finished as the No. 6 TE in standard and No 8 TE in PPR formats last season. He set career highs in receptions (54), yards (569) and touchdowns (6) in his first full year as a starter. With another year of growth in Matt Nagy’s offense, it wouldn’t be surprising if he improved on his numbers from 2018.

Fantasy Downside
While Burton produced well enough to finish as a top 10 tight end last season, it wasn’t pretty. Most of his production came in the first half of the season. He scored five of his six touchdowns in the first eight games along with 65% of his receiving yards. He had 92 PPR points in the first eight games and just 48 in the final eight. Burton had 10 games with 30 receiving yards or less in 2018.

2019 Bottom Line
Burton’s not a star option at the TE position like Travis Kelce, but he does enough on a weekly basis to have value. This says more about the TE position as a whole rather than Burton himself, though. If he can remain consistent with his first-half production from last season, he’ll be around a top 10 option at this position.

CHI TE Trey Burton - Week 18 Fantasy Football Outlook

Wild Card Playoffs vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Trey Burton wasn't great in 2018, but not a lot of tight ends were. Even though Burton put up fairly low numbers (averaged 35 yards per game), he still finished as the eighth-highest scoring tight end. He finished the year with at least four receptions and 30+ yards in three straight games, so you can likely expect production somewhere in that range with a possibility for a score. He does get a tough matchup against the Eagles, who allowed the fifth-fewest fantasy points to opposing TEs. Philly only gave up two touchdowns to the position all season.

CHI TE Trey Burton - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Minnesota Vikings

Trey Burton caught all five targets for 30 yards last week. Burton has been a mostly disappointing option this year, but that's the tight end position in general for 2018. He gets a tough matchup against the Vikings in Week 17, a team he struggled against earlier in the year (one catch, nine yards). Burton is a low TE1 option and will be a TD-or-bust candidate in Week 17.

CHI TE Trey Burton - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at San Francisco 49ers

Trey Burton was ... productive? He wasn't incredible, but he had his best fantasy game since Week 7. It was his second-highest yardage output (36) since that game and just the second time he's scored since then. He also saw seven targets, which is higher than normal.

He actually gets a tough matchup this week against the 49ers who are giving up the sixth-fewest fantasy points to opposing tight ends. In fact, in the last three games combined, San Francisco has given up five receptions for 26 yards to the position. Burton is a touchdown-or-bust TE option this week and the 49ers have only given up one score to the position since Week 4.

CHI TE Trey Burton - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Green Bay Packers

Trey Burton caught two passes for 22 yards last week. He's now had below 30 yards in six of his last seven games. He's also scored just one time in that span as well. And to make matters worse, he gets a tough matchup against the Packers this week. Green Bay is allowing the third-fewest fantasy points to opposing tight ends and held Burton to one catch for 15 yards in Week 1.
