Week 3 vs. Denver Broncos
Marquez Valdes-Scantling got the same six targets he received in Week 1. That was the good news last week. The bad? He managed just three receptions 19 yards as the Packers got out to an early lead and cruised. The Broncos' pass defense has been pretty tough thus far, but part of that has been who they have faced, as well. With at least six targets each week, and maybe more, Valdes-Scantling is a solid start as at least a flex each week.
Week 2 vs. Minnesota Vikings
Marquez Valdes-Scantling got six targets last week, turning them into four receptions for 52 yards. It was a decent start for the second-year receiver against a tough Bears defense. He isn't likely to draw any double coverage in this game as the Vikings will focus their efforts on stopping Davante Adams. He had two receptions for six yards in two games against the Vikings last season, but should easily top that. Even so, MVS isn't anything more than a flex option this week.
Week 1 at Chicago
Marquez Valdes-Scantling figures to be on the field 90% of the time after being more of a part-time player as a rookie in 2018. But that might not necessarily mean he contributes greatly in this one. Valdes-Scantling will be more of the downfield threat, and the Packers might not want to test the Bears' pass rush by trying to push the ball down the field to him. Valdes-Scantling should probably only be used this week as a flex play. Better days are ahead.
Fantasy Upside
Marquez Valdes-Scantling enters 2019 as the starter at receiver opposite Davante Adams, who should demand a lot of coverage. He also has Aaron Rodgers as his QB, which is never a bad thing. MVS has talent. He showed that at times in 2018. Now in year two, he should be ready to produce even more.
Fantasy Downside
In a similar situation last season -- he made 10 starts -- Valdes-Scantling caught just 38 of 73 targets. You have to be better than 50% with Rodgers throwing you the ball. Any such stumble this season could lead to a benching, as the Packers have a bevy of young receivers.
2019 Bottom Line
Valdes-Scantling's rookie season wasn't a waste. After all, he caught 38 passes for 581 yards and two scores. That 15.1 yards per catch average was solid. He just should have caught more given his targets. Look for the targets and catches to both increase in 2019. MVS has a current ADP between Rounds 11 and 13 right now. That seems about right. But with a little good fortune, he could out-produce that draft position.
Week 14 vs. Atlanta Falcons
Marquez Valdes-Scantling had a better showing last week, but barely, catching two passes for 19 yards. He's just too inconsistent to trust in a fantasy playoff week. There are far better options available.
Week 13 vs. Arizona Cardinals
That's two games in a row with just one reception for Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who has struggled playing in the slot. If Randall Cobb can somehow make it back this week, that would move Valdes-Scantling back outside where he belongs. And he would be a viable flex play. Otherwise, he shouldn't be in your lineup.
Week 12 at Minnesota Vikings
Marquez Valdes-Scantling might have been one of the most disappointing performers of Week 1, catching just one pass for eight yards. He also got just three targets, with two coming on Green Bay's final possession. With Davante Adams drawing Xavier Rhodes this week, Valdes-Scantling should get more love this week. But given his usage and the fact he's been a bit boom or bust, don't use him as anything more than a flex option this week against a tough Minnesota pass defense.
Week 11 at Seattle Seahawks
Marquez Valdes-Scantling managed just 44 yards last week but did it on six receptions, and has solidified himself as the No. 2 option in Green Bay. With Aaron Rodgers throwing him the ball every week, that means he's no worse than a WR3 option in a given week. Davante Adams is going to get plenty of attention, so Valdes-Scantling will continue to get one-on-one matchups. Keep on rolling with him as a WR3 with upside.
Week 10 vs. Miami Dolphins
Marquez Valdes-Scantling had three receptions for 101 yards last week against the Patriots, his fourth consecutive game with 100 yards or a touchdown. With Geronimo Allison going on IR this week, he shows up solidly as a WR3 option with plenty of upside. Valdes-Scantling is still on the waiver wire in some season-long leagues and should be picked up immediately. Moving forward, he's a WR3 play with plenty of upside.
Week 9 at New England Patriots
Marquez Valdes-Scantling had his third productive game in a row, though he did it last week on little volume, catching just two passes for 45 yards and a touchdown. Because of his role in the offense, he's worth a play only as a flex option unless you're feeling particularly lucky. There's a lot of mouths to feed in this offense.
