Week 6 vs. Indianapolis Colts
Evan Engram saw eight targets against the Bills in Week 5, his fourth straight game with exactly eight looks. But he was pedestrian in his output, with just four catches for 28 yards, both lows during this span. Engram managed just 4.8 Half-PPR points and finished behind another 20 players in fantasy points last week. He is still the TE8 in fantasy points per game.
You can't keep a good man down for long, however, and Engram should be able to bounce back against the Colts in Week 6. The Colts are not a daunting matchup for tight ends, ranking 17th in aFPA to the position. Look for Engram to post high-end TE1 numbers this week.
Week 5 vs. Buffalo Bills (London)
It's not flashy, or sexy, but Evan Engram is producing quality tight end numbers in 2023. Against the Falcons in Week 4, Engram had his second consecutive eight-target, seven-catch performance, turning these opportunities into 59 yards. Engram finished the week as the TE10, a few spots below his overall TE7 standing in Half-PPR scoring.
Engram should be in for another decent workload this week against the Bills, despite the less-than-stellar matchup. The Bills rank eighth in aFPA to tight ends. Still, Engram has the eye and trust of his quarterback and should remain as a high-end TE1 option.
Week 4 vs. Atlanta Falcons (London)
Evan Engram continued on his consistent way against the Texans in Week 3, catching seven of his eight targets for 67 yards and 10.2 Half PPR points. Engram was the TE7 in Week 3 and is TE6 in fantasy points per game after three weeks. He ranks third among tight ends in targets and receiving yards and second in receptions.
Engram is one of the safest bets on the Jaguars offense in Week 4 as they take on the Falcons in London. The Falcons have offered minimal resistance to tight ends in 2023, and rank 30th in aFPA to the position. Engram should finish as a strong TE1 this week...just like every week, so it seems.
Week 3 vs Houston Texans
It was a rough week for the Jaguars, but Evan Engram did "Evan Engram things" against the Chiefs. He saw eight targets, catching six, and racked up 57 receiving yards on his way to 8.7 Half PPR points. Engram was TE9 in Week 2 and currently sits as the TE3 after two weeks.
The Texans are a fairly middling matchup for tight ends, and given the consistency of his role, there is no reason to fear starting Evan Engram this week. He projects to be a mid-tier TE1 once again.
Week 2 vs Kansas City Chiefs
Evan Engram commanded a decent 16% target share in Week 1, catching all five of his targets for 49 yards. He didn't find the end zone but was able to put up 7.4 Half-PPR points. This tally was good enough to see Engram start his season with a TE7 rank.
Engram's workload, and the prospect of a shootout between the Jaguars and the Chiefs, should be enough to keep him fantasy-relevant for another week. He should be viewed as a mid-tier TE1 for the week ahead.
Week 1 at Indianapolis Colts
After a relatively quiet start to the 2022 campaign, Evan Engram exploded late and finished with career numbers in most key receiving categories. Engram caught 73 balls for 766 yards - both career highs - while scoring four touchdowns. He finished as the TE6 in Half-PPR scoring, and TE5 if you don't include Taysom Hill (which we really shouldn't, let's be honest).
Engram doesn't have the easiest matchup to start the 2023 season, as the Jaguars travel to Indianapolis. The Colts were 10th in aFPA to tight ends a year ago. Still, at fantasy sports' most volatile spot, Engram can still be viewed as a safe option to be among the top 12 scorers at his position this week.
Fantasy Upside
Following a strong rookie campaign with the Giants in 2017, Evan Engram underperformed and was hampered by injuries in three of his next four seasons in New York before signing a one-year deal with the Jaguars to try and resuscitate his career. And bring it back to life he did. Engram had a career year with 73 catches for 766 receiving yards and four touchdowns. With a new three-year, $41 million contract, the previously franchise-tagged Engram finds himself in a promising situation. He's on a team with playoff aspirations, surrounded by young talent and has a quarterback in Trevor Lawrence that made huge strides in the right direction in his second year.
Fantasy Downside
There's a good chance Engram's numbers will trend downward with wide receiver Calvin Ridley being added to the fray in Jacksonville, but then again, Engram was the team's third-most targeted pass-catcher last season.
2023 Bottom Line
Even with Ridley on board, landing Engram at his late-sixth round ADP could pay dividends throughout the course of the season if he is able to stay healthy.
Week 17 at Houston Texans
Evan Engram's late-season surge continued in Week 16 against the Jets. Engram drew eight targets against the Jets, catching seven for 113 yards. Engram has five or more grabs in four straight games and more than 100 yards in two of his last three. Engram picked up 14.8 Half PPR points and finished as the TE5 last week.
Engram's emergence over the last few weeks makes him the most trustworthy Jaguars pass-catcher in Week 17. The Texans are fairly mediocre when it comes to defending tight ends, ranking 16th in aFPA to the position. It's hard to project Engram to finish as anything less than a top 5 option at the tight end spot during Fantasy Championship week.
Week 16 at New York Jets
Evan Engram continued his good recent run of form against the Cowboys in Week 15. He saw 10 targets, his second consecutive double-digit target game, and caught eight balls for 62 yards. Engram finished as the TE10 with 10.2 Half PPR points, his third game in a row with at least 10 fantasy points.
Engram might be able to keep up his fine form against the Jets this week. As good as they are against running backs and wide receivers, the Jets have been a little more generous to tight ends, as they rank 19th in aFPA to the position. They've allowed 71 receptions to tight ends, the seventh most in the league. Engram is a solid TE1 option this week.
Week 15 vs. Dallas Cowboys
Put simply, Evan Engram had a game for the ages against the Titans in Week 14. Engram caught 11 of his 15 targets for 162 yards and two touchdowns. All these marks were new season highs. As were the 33.7 Half PPR points he scored, more than any other tight end in Week 14.
Engram is not going to do that again in his lifetime, one suspects, so we should probably temper our expectations ahead of a clash with the Cowboys this week. The Cowboys rank 11th in aFPA to tight ends. Still, Engram has a 28% share of the targets over the last two weeks, and his form puts him firmly into the TE1 conversation this week.
