BAL RB J.K. Dobbins - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Houston Texans

J.K. Dobbins had a false start to the season last year, as he missed two games and then struggled through four outings before missing another six. When he finally got healthy and returned for a four-game stint toward the end of the year, he was pretty productive. He averaged 99.25 yards over that stretch, averaging 4.3 yards per carry. Dobbins was held to a lone reception and a single touchdown during that time, but he definitely showed the potential he has as a runner.

Dobbins is expected to be healthy to start the season, and as long as that doesn’t change, he has a heck of a matchup to kickoff the year. The Texans were dead last in aFPA to opposing running backs in 2022. While Houston should improve defensively with new additions to the roster and the coaching staff, it’s possible this game gets lopsided early and the running backs prevail. We have Dobbins listed as a RB2 option in a good matchup, and he gets a slight bump in non-PPR leagues.

BAL RB J.K. Dobbins - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
J.K. Dobbins had a false start to last season, injured heading into the year, then injured again after attempting to get going from Week 3 through Week 6. Coming off an ACL injury, it wasn’t surprising to see him struggle to get back to full strength right away. He finished the season strong. He was the RB14 during the four weeks he played late in the year, and finished 2022 with 520 yards and three touchdowns in eight games. He should be the primary ball-carrier in Baltimore heading into this season, giving him upside to continue where he left off in December.

Fantasy Downside
The injuries are an easy place to start when looking for downside, but the bigger concern with Dobbins is a change in offensive philosophy and the lack of activity in the passing game. Dobbins had just seven receptions in eight games last year. He averages just 1.4 targets per game in his short career. The arrival of Todd Monken at offensive coordinator isn’t expected to help in that aspect. Monken likes a downfield passing attack, which could reduce Dobbins’ touches. With Lamar Jackson already a threat to vulture touchdown opportunities, there’s a lot to be concerned about for managers banking on Dobbins for a big 2023 breakout.

2023 Bottom Line
Dobbins has upside now that he’s healthy and is the clear lead back in Baltimore, but the risks keep him from being a true fantasy RB1 target. Luckily, his ranking (RB20) and ADP (fourth round) reflect the risk of taking him. Dobbins is likely to continue the pace he was on at the end of last season, making him a viable RB2 option in most leagues. Draft him at cost.

BAL RB J.K. Dobbins - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

J.K. Dobbins was held to 59 yards last week against the Falcons, but he still received 12 carries and clearly has a prominent role in the offense with double-digit touches in three straight games.

Dobbins has a tough matchup this week against a Steelers defense that ranks sixth in aFPA to opposing running backs. Expect another busy day for Dobbins, but with the tough matchup, he should be considered a fringe-RB2 at best.

BAL RB J.K. Dobbins - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Atlanta Falcons

J.K. Dobbins put together another solid performance last week against the Browns, rushing for 125 yards on 13 carries. He led the backfield in touches and also was on the field for 38% of the team’s offensive snaps - more than double that of Gus Edwards.

This week, Dobbins faces a Falcons defense that ranks 14th in aFPA to opposing running backs. Expect another healthy dose of Dobbins and the Baltimore run game. The Ravens have really struggled offensively all season, but especially without Lamar Jackson, so temper expectations for Dobbins. Still, his workload should make him a viable RB2 option in most leagues.

BAL RB J.K. Dobbins - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Cleveland Browns

J.K. Dobbins returned to action last week against the Steelers and had a great game, rushing for 120 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Dobbins still shared time with Gus Edwards, who had 13 carries of his own, and the team will likely continue to use both backs for the remainder of the season as long as both remain healthy.

Dobbins has a great matchup this week against the Browns, who rank 31st in aFPA to opposing running backs. Expect Dobbins to get a nice share of the workload again and to thrive in a nice matchup. There’s definitely risk based on the fickle usage of the Baltimore backfield, but we have Dobbins ranked as a low-end RB2 in a nice matchup.

BAL RB J.K. Dobbins - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs. Cleveland Browns

J.K. Dobbins was held to just 15 yards on seven carries last week against the Giants and he left the game after his knee tightened up on him. His status is in question heading into this weekend’s tilt against the Browns, but even if he’s active, he should be considered a risky bet. Not only is his knee a concern, he also has zero targets in his last two games. Dobbins has long-term upside, but it appears the Ravens will continue to be careful with him, health-wise, so fantasy managers should take a wait-and-see approach.

Update: Dobbins is out for 4-6 weeks, so be sure to get him in an IR slot and out of your lineup.

BAL RB J.K. Dobbins - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at New York Giants

After a pair of touchdowns in Week 2, J.K. Dobbins was held to 44 scoreless yards on eight carries last week against the Bengals. Dobbins still led the team’s running backs in carries, however, and should be considered the primary option in the Baltimore backfield.

The Giants rank 10th in aFPA to opposing running backs, so it’s not going to be an easy matchup for Dobbins this week. Expect a low-scoring affair, which should give Dobbins an opportunity to rack up touches. We have him as a low-end RB2 option this week.
