Scouting report

NYJ RB Tevin Coleman - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 at Houston
Veteran Tevin Coleman will see time with Ty Johnson as rookie Michael Carter is out for a couple of weeks. Coleman has 30 carries for 118 yards on the season and five receptions as well.

The Jets face the Texans who ranked 19th in aFPA to running backs. Coleman is the highest-ranked back for New York in standard leagues but not enough to warrant a start. Keep Coleman on the bench.

NYJ RB Tevin Coleman - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. New England
It truly appears the Jets will be doing a running back-by-committee although Tevin Coleman is the lead back at this point. He had nine carries for 24 yards as New York's running game struggled. It could be like this for a while until the Jets figure out who they are on offense.

Coleman faces the Patriots who gave up only 74 yards on the ground last week against Miami. New England's defense is expected to be a top 10 unit and especially good against the run.

No Jets running backs should be in your lineup for Week 2 including Coleman. In fact, the best fantasy running back from this team will probably be Michael Carter as they should get the rookie more touches every week. They expect him to be the running back of the future. Keep Coleman on the bench.

NYJ RB Tevin Coleman - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Carolina
The veteran Tevin Coleman will be the official starter at running back for the Jets which gives him some short-term value. We should see running back by committee to start the season as they get the rookie Michael Carter and Ty Johnson carries.

We know that Coleman is capable of playing in the league but we don't know how good the Jets' offense will be. They face the Panthers who were ranked 14th in aFPA to running backs last season.

Coleman should start on the bench for Week 1. We need to see how the Jets use their running backs and Coleman is the highest-ranked back on the team to start, he won't get enough numbers to warrant a fantasy start.

SF RB Tevin Coleman - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Arizona Cardinals

Tevin Coleman had just three carries for 11 yards last week, splitting time with the other 47 running backs on the 49ers’ roster. With Raheem Mostert shut down, Coleman could get some of the workload he got last week, but that’s a lot to bank on when Jeff Wilson is the likely lead back and Jerick McKinnon is still getting snaps. Leave him on waivers.

SF RB Tevin Coleman - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Dallas Cowboys

Tevin Coleman has been in and out of the lineup throughout this season and seems to have taken a backseat to not just Raheem Mostert, but Jeff Wilson as well. He has a shot at some change-of-pace work with Mostert likely out this week, but fantasy owners should ignore him. It’s too risky to expect him to put up numbers.

SF RB Tevin Coleman - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at New York Jets

Tevin Coleman only had four carries for 18 yards in Week 1 against the Cardinals, but that might be a product of the poor air quality more than a true indication of his role. It’s still possible the 49ers use a hot-hand approach, so fantasy owners shouldn’t immediately drop Coleman based on the first game. It certainly isn’t a good start however, to see Raheem Mostert get 15 carries, compared to just four for Coleman. Owners should leave him out of fantasy lineups until further notice.

SF RB Tevin Coleman - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Arizona Cardinals

Tevin Coleman had some good games last year, but found himself largely backing up Raheem Mostert as the season came to a close. Coleman is worth rostering, because he should still get some change-of-pace touches, but all indications are that Mostert is going to be the starter this season as well. Until that changes, it’s hard to trust having Coleman in your lineup, even in a pretty good matchup.

UPDATE: Coleman's status is in question due to poor air quality. I would avoid him this week.
