Scouting report

WAS QB Sam Howell - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Sam Howell struggled last week as he finished with 249 yards, no touchdowns and an interception. Howell hasn't been getting much support from his offensive line as he's been sacked 40 times through seven games, an average of over five per game. Despite that, he's actually been a solid fantasy quarterback so far this season, sitting at QB11. This week he faces the Eagles (27th aFPA), a team he played against earlier in the year. In Week 4, Howell finished with 290 yards, one touchdown and an INT against Philly. We're projecting fairly similar numbers for Howell this week, which would make him a solid play if you're in need of a QB. Howell should be viewed around the QB15 range for Week 8.

WAS QB Sam Howell - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 at New York Giants

Sam Howell had a weird game last week as he only completed 14 passes for 153 yards, but he managed to score three touchdowns. Howell has been serviceable so far this season as he's currently QB12 in fantasy. He's 9th in pass yards per game and tied for 9th in pass touchdowns. His numbers are impressive considering he's also been sacked a league-high 34 times. This week he draws an OK matchup vs. the Giants who are 12th in aFPA to QBs. If Howell isn't already rostered, he's a perfect bye week or injury replacement for Week 7. He's inside of our top 15 QBs this week.

WAS QB Sam Howell - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Atlanta Falcons

Sam Howell had his best game of the season last week throwing for a career high 388 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He also added 19 yards on the ground. Outside of a terrible game vs. Buffalo, Howell has been pretty serviceable this season, hitting at least 290 yards in three games. He's not someone we'd trust starting every week, but he's a great streaming option or bye week filler if he's given a good matchup. This week he gets an OK matchup vs. the Falcons who are 12th in aFPA to QBs. Atlanta so far this season has given up the 5th fewest pass yards to quarterbacks. Howell is an OK option in Week 6 if you need a bye week or injury replacement at QB.

WAS QB Sam Howell - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs Chicago Bears

Sam Howell bounced back in Week 4 with a decent performance vs. the Eagles. He threw for 290 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions, and added a season-high 40 rushing yards. Through four games this season, Howell is averaging 240.3 pass yards with a 4 to 5 TD to INT ratio. Not the best, but he's at least been serviceable. And serviceable is perfect when it comes to finding bye week replacements like some owners might need in Week 5. Howell becomes a decent play this week as he faces a Bears defense that's given up the 2nd-most fantasy points to quarterbacks this year. Howell should be viewed as a top 15 QB for Week 5.

WAS QB Sam Howell - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Philadelphia Eagles

Sam Howell had a brutal outing last week as he threw for a season-low 170 yards with no touchdowns and four interceptions. He was also sacked nine times as he had no answer for Buffalo's defense. Howell's been OK through three weeks, averaging 223.7 pass yards per game. He's only averaging 14 rush yards per game, though, which is below our preseason projections for him. Howell could be in trouble again this week as he faces the Eagles. Philadelphia has allowed the 6th-most fantasy points to quarterbacks this season, but they have a strong defensive line that might be able to repeat what Buffalo did to Washington in Week 3. Howell is outside of the top 20 quarterbacks in Week 4.

WAS QB Sam Howell - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs Buffalo Bills

Sam Howell had a solid outing last week against a tough Broncos defense. He finished with 299 yards with two touchdowns and no turnovers while adding 13 yards on the ground. Howell has been pretty good so far from both a real-life perspective and in fantasy. He's QB12 through two games ahead of guys like Josh Allen and Justin Fields. His production may decline in Week 3, though, as he gets a tough test against the Bills. So far this season, Buffalo has given up the 4th-fewest fantasy points to quarterbacks. Howell should be viewed as a matchup-based streamer, and this week does not favor him. He's a bottom 10 option at quarterback in Week 3.

WAS QB Sam Howell - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Denver Broncos

Sam Howell was OK in Week 1 as he finished with 202 pass yards, one touchdown and an interception. On the ground, he ran twice for 11 yards and a touchdown. Howell had some trouble in the pocket as he ended up being sacked six times in that game. He'll face a tough Broncos defense this week that gave up the 8th-fewest fantasy points to quarterbacks a season ago. There are plenty of other quarterbacks with more promise this week than Howell. Howell is around the QB20 range in our rankings for Week 2.
