Scouting report

by Jordan Heck

CLE QB Robert Griffin III - 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Robert Griffin III essentially took last year off from football as he was inactive for all 16 of the Redskins games in 2015. Now he’s healthy, fresh and is ready to begin his new career in Cleveland. There’s no way of knowing for sure how RGIII is now, but we know what he was just a few years ago, and that was a dynamic playmaker.

In his rookie season, he ran for 815 yards, and looked to be a future fantasy star. Then injuries cut his playing time down, and Kirk Cousins was a better fit for Jay Gruden’s offense, so Griffin took a backseat.

He’s not guaranteed to be the starting quarterback, but reports claim the Browns are all-in on having Griffin succeed. If he can recapture what he did as a rookie, then he certainly will.

Helping him will be rookie Corey Coleman and last year’s surprise at tight end, Gary Barnidge. Dynamic wideout Josh Gordon can also apply for reinstatement on August 1, which gives him the possibility of rejoining the Browns should he stay clean. Coleman, Barnidge, Gordon and even running back Duke Johnson could be enough to help Griffin excel during his first year with the Browns.

Fantasy Downside
Reports from Cleveland’s early practices say Griffin looks terrible. Perhaps the year off has him a bit rusty. He needed to get out of Washington, but there’s no guarantee Cleveland is the best landing spot for him.

Even his potentially great weapons have question marks. Coleman is a rookie who may need some time adapting to the professional level. Barnidge is a one-year wonder and we haven’t seen him be good for multiple seasons. Even if Gordon is reinstated, there’s a chance the Browns will try and trade him. We don’t even know if Griffin is going to be the starter in Cleveland, as coach Hue Jackson won’t say for sure who will top the depth chart.

Bottom Line
Griffin is an interesting player to pay attention to because we all know about his potential. But we haven’t seen him at that top level in years, and there’s not a lot of confidence in this Browns offense to make us fall in love with RGIII. There’s so much uncertainty surrounding Griffin.

There’s nothing on paper we can point to and say “this makes Griffin worth taking.” Everything about him is having faith that he’ll be able to overcome his injuries, thrive in Hue Jackson’s offense and hope Coleman can produce and Gordon gets reinstated. Unless something dramatic changes before the season, we have to view Griffin on the very low end of quarterback options this year.

WAS QB Robert Griffin III - 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
You only need to look back to his rookie season to see the fantasy upside of Robert Griffin III. Griffin used his legs and arm to put together a rookie year that everyone thought would be par for the course. Griffin can throw for accuracy and, as an added bonus to fantasy owners, pick up yards on the ground.

Fantasy Downside
Outside of his rookie season, Griffin hasn't been very good. Injuries haven't helped his cause either, but he is working to bring it all back together. It is worth noting that Griffin hasn't run the ball as often or effectively as many thought he would by this point in his career. He is also been sloppy with the ball at times and has taken hits when he really didn't need to. The Skins TE position is also banged up after losing Logan Paulsen and Niles Paul for the season which leaves oft-injured Jordan Reed as the only legit threat at the position.

Bottom Line
Griffin is ranked 21st on our QB list and is another QB2 option with possible upside to consider late in drafts. RG3 averaged just 12 fantasy points a game in the six games he started and finished last season, so while there is hope he will improve, there are much safer options.

WAS QB Robert Griffin III - Week 17, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 - Griffin vs. Dallas

Robert Griffin III put together another decent, real-life performance, although his fantasy numbers didn't prove a whole lot. He finish with 220 yards throwing and 11 rushing yards but helped the Skins upset the Eagles last week.

Washington ended up with three rushing TDs, including two short ones from fullback Darrel Young. Griffin did throw an INT, his fourth of the season. This week, RGIII gets the Cowboys in what isn't a bad matchup on paper. The 'Boys don't have a ton to play for this week but do plan to play starters according to reports. You have to imagine at some point RGIII will see time against backups, increasing his value a bit. While Dallas doesn't have much to play for, RGIII is playing for a job - somewhere. That's all you can ask from a starting QB in Week 17. He's still a risky play but should see a full game's worth of snaps.

WAS QB Robert Griffin III - Week 16, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 - Griffin vs. Philly

Robert Griffin III had a pretty decent fantasy performance last week, throwing for 236 yards and a TD while adding 46 rushing yards. He had a controversial rushing TD called back after he lost control a bit.

RGIII is an interesting play this week. While it's tough to trust him in what is likely your league's finals, it's a very friendly matchup against an Eagles team that was just lit up through the air by Tony Romo and the Cowboys. Griffin comes in ranked 12th on our list this week, which is pretty respectable when you consider how his season has gone to date. But the potential is once against there for RGIII, especially if he can pile up some rushing yards. We've all seen things come crashing down though, which is why you'll need some guts to start him if you're playing for a title. Hopefully you have a better option.

WAS QB Robert Griffin III - Week 12, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 - Griffin vs. San Francisco

It wasn't an impressive day for Robert Griffin III as the Skins lost at home to Tampa Bay last week. Griffin threw for 207 yards and a TD but threw two interceptions. He added 41 yards rushing.

It was supposed to be a much better day for Griffin's fantasy owners but it never came to fruition. Now the team is a bit of a mess in the locker room. On top of that, it's a tough matchup this week on the road in San Francisco. The Niners rank fifth in allowing fantasy points to QBs and Griffin takes a major hit in our rankings - coming in at 23rd. He pretty much needs to stay on your bench this week. His matchups get more friendly starting next week and for the rest of the season, but he's going to have to earn back owners' trust first.

WAS QB Robert Griffin III - Week 11, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 - Griffin vs. Tampa Bay

Robert Griffin III returned in Week 9 against the Vikings and threw for 251 yards and a TD while adding 24 rushing yards. He did throw an INT as well.

It wasn't an easy matchup for the passing game on top of Griffin missing six weeks of action leading up to the contest. So, the potential is there for RGIII this week as the team hosts the Bucs, who rank 29th in allowing fantasy points to QBs. Coming off the bye week and with some extra preparation, Griffin should be able to put up some decent fantasy numbers in this contest and as a result ranks as a low-end QB1 this week. Outside of Week 12 at San Francisco, Griffin's schedule is pretty favorable for the foreseeable future.

WAS QB Robert Griffin III - Week 9, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 - Griffin vs. Minnesota
Media outlets are starting to report that Robert Griffin III has been cleared and will start Week 9. It's not really a surprise as news he was very close came out earlier in the week.

Griffin comes in 13th on our QB list but it's a tough matchup against the Vikings who are ranked third in allowing fantasy points to QBs. Griffin is certainly worth owning and appears to be a decent QB2 option in those types of leagues. But in 10-team leagues that start one QB, maybe it's best to wait it out and see how he looks before throwing him in your lineup - unless, of course, he ranks way ahead of your next best option. In terms of fantasy numbers, the Vikes are weaker against the run so it's likely the Skins try to ride Alfred Morris and Roy Helu a bit to take the pressure off RGIII in his first game back.
