WAS TE Logan Thomas - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
Logan Thomas had a career resurrection in 2020 when he finished as a top-10 tight end in fantasy. It caught people off guard considering the former quarterback had less than 200 yards in every season since becoming a tight end. He continued that success into the start of 2021, averaging 4-39-0.7 in his first three games before suffering an injury and missing the majority of the season. When active, Thomas scored in three of his five games while averaging around 40 yards, which would have put him on pace to essentially repeat his 2020 season. Thomas enters the year as Washington’s starting tight end again, so the opportunity is there for him to continue playing well.

2022 Fantasy Downside
Thomas is 31 heading into this season, which is around when we see tight ends hit their decline. He also has some additional competition as Washington brought in 5th-round draft pick Cole Turner. The Commanders also still have John Bates, who proved he was capable of being a starter filling in for Thomas last season. Speaking of which, Thomas suffered a torn ACL in the middle of last season, so there’s a chance he misses some time at the start of the year.

2022 Bottom Line
When Thomas was active last season, he played really well. He was essentially on pace to repeat his breakout 2020 season, but injuries forced him to miss almost the entire year. If Thomas is able to play at the start of the year, and maintain his role, he’s a steal at his current ADP. But Turner’s arrival, plus Thomas’ age and injury history provide enough red flags to warrant his late-round ADP. He could be worth a flier near the end of fantasy drafts in deeper leagues, but you’ll likely want someone else in your starting lineup in Week 1.

WAS TE Logan Thomas - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at Las Vegas Raiders

Logan Thomas returned from injury last week, his first appearance since exiting in Week 4. He played OK, finishing 3-31 on six targets. He nearly had a touchdown, but it was called back. He appeared somewhat limited, playing on 79% of the offensive snaps after playing 100% of the snaps in the first three games of the season. He gets a favorable matchup against the Raiders this week. Las Vegas has been tough on wide receivers this year, but has allowed the 2nd-most average fantasy points to tight ends. We like Thomas as a lower-end TE1 in Week 13.

WAS TE Logan Thomas - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs. Seattle Seahawks

Logan Thomas returned from injured reserve and started practicing this week. He appears to be on track to play in Week 12 vs. the Seahawks, but his health will be worth monitoring to make sure. Washington will welcome the talented tight end back as it appears Ricky Seals-Jones will be out this week. Thomas was productive before his injury, averaging 11.2 (PPR) fantasy points per game this season. And assuming he's healthy enough to go, he'll draw a favorable matchup vs. the Seahawks in Week 12. He'll be somewhat of a risk this week given his injury, but he's not a bad pickup if you need help at tight end.

WAS TE Logan Thomas - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Atlanta Falcons

Logan Thomas finished 4-42-1 in Week 3, but he also had a fumble that knocked off some points. Still, Thomas has scored in two out of three games this season and is averaging nearly 40 yards per contest. He's proven that last year wasn't a fluke, and he can be relied on as a lower-tier TE1. This week he faces a Falcons defense that's allowed three touchdowns to tight ends this season, tied for most in the league. We'd expect another 40-50-yard performance from Thomas with a solid chance at a score.

WAS TE Logan Thomas - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Buffalo Bills

Logan Thomas had a strong Week 2 performance, finishing 5-45 on seven targets. Backup tight end Ricky Seals-Jones vultured a touchdown away, but it was still a good game for the converted tight end. Thomas also 100% of the offensive snaps for the second-straight game. He'll continue to be in low-end TE1 territory this week against the Bills. Buffalo hasn't given up a touchdown to the tight end position so far this season, but it's only been two games so it's a small sample size.

WAS TE Logan Thomas - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. New York Giants

Logan Thomas had a solid Week 1, finishing 3-30-1 on three targets. He scored Washington's only offensive touchdown of the day and had solid production considering Washington's overall low passing numbers. He'll face a Giants defense in Week 2 that allowed a big game to Noah Fant (6-62) in Week 1. With Thomas' usage, he should continue to be viewed in the mid-TE1 range in Week 2.

WAS TE Logan Thomas - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Los Angeles Chargers

Logan Thomas had a rare seventh-season breakout last year as he finished with 110 targets, best for third in the league. He gets an interesting Week 1 matchup against the Chargers who allowed the 11th-fewest yards to tight ends but were tied for the fourth-most touchdowns to tight ends last season. Even if Thomas doesn't find the endzone, he should still be a solid play in Week 1. With Curtis Samuel inactive, Thomas should continue to get targets like he did in 2020. We like him as a strong TE1 play to start the year.
