Scouting report

DEN RB Juwan Thompson - Week 7, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 – Juwan Thompson vs. San Francisco 49ers
Ronnie Hillman received 24 of Denver’s 32 RB rushing attempts last week in the win over the Jets. The other eight carries went to Juwan Thompson, who ran for 38 yards. Thompson is the bigger back and will likely get the short yardage opportunities in Montee Ball’s absence, but the rookie is not worth a fantasy start, even against a 49ers defense that is fifth against the run.

DEN RB Juwan Thompson - Week 6, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 – Juwan Thompson vs. New York Jets
With Montee Ball out due to a groin injury, Juwan Thompson took advantage of some playing time last week versus the Cardinals and scored his first NFL TD – an eight-yard run in the fourth quarter to ice the game. C.J. Anderson had been in front of Thompson during the first month of the season, but was inactive Sunday likely due to Thompson's role on special teams. Ronnie Hillman is more of a finesse back, with Thompson the bruiser and Anderson also likely playing a role on Sunday. Thompson is worth a stash, but it remains to be seen how he will be used with Montee Ball out.

DEN RB Juwan Thompson - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
The undrafted rookie from Duke made a quick impression on the coaching staff and Denver fans in the first preseason game, running for 59 yards on only six carries. Juwan Thompson is the biggest back on the Broncos roster at 225 pounds, which could lead him to see some action near the goal line once the real season begins. He’s shown good pass protection and receiving skills in camp.

Fantasy Downside
At best, Thompson is the No. 3 RB on the depth chart. Montee Ball and Ronnie Hillman will still see the bulk of the action once the regular season begins, limiting Juwan’s playing time.

Bottom Line
The big RB is not worthy of a fantasy roster spot, but is worth keeping an eye on as Ball and Hillman have both had problems hanging on to the ball. If Thompson continues to show good things in the preseason he may be able to sneak up and challenge for time on the field.
