Scouting report

LAC RB Joshua Kelley - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at Las Vegas Raiders

Joshua Kelley was the clear second fiddle to Austin Ekeler among Chargers running backs in Week 12, playing 15 snaps to Ekeler's 46. Kelley carried the ball twice for four yards and caught two of his three targets for another 16. But these deeds did very little in terms of fantasy production.

It would be a great matchup for Kelley in Week 13, if not for the presence of Austin Ekeler. The Raiders rank 29th in aFPA to running backs. But as long as Ekeler is around, there will only be scraps for the other backs. You don't need to start Kelley this week.

LAC RB Joshua Kelley - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs. Denver Broncos

Joshua Kelley enjoyed his most productive game of the season in Week 5 against the Browns. Kelley rushed 10 times for 49 yards and his first touchdown of the year, while also catching both of his targets for 33 yards. Kelley played a season-high 38% of the Chargers' snaps and could begin to see a more regular role as he spells lead back Austin Ekeler. Kelley notched 15.2 Half-PPR points and finished as the RB18 in Week 5.

Kelley will need a decent workload if he has any fantasy relevance in Week 6. The Broncos are fifth in aFPA to running backs this season and have only seen 96 running back rush attempts against them. Still, if he can wrestle away some of Ekeler's high-value touches, he could make some noise for fantasy managers. Consider him a low-end RB3 this week.

LAC RB Joshua Kelley - 2021 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Joshua Kelley, who was a healthy scratch in two of the Chargers' final four games, was a bit of a disappointment as a rookie. As CBSSports.com noted, his fall from fantasy grace came precipitously as Kelley saw 47 touches in his first three games as a complement to Austin Ekeler before yielding time to Justin Jackson and then Kalen Ballage as the season progressed. By the time Ekeler (quad) returned from a multi-month absence, Kelley had completely fallen out of the rotation in favor of Ballage despite the two having similarly modest yards-per-carry averages. Looking ahead, the UCLA product could have a chance to increase his role in his second NFL season with a new coaching regime on board. That the Chargers have more invested in him (a 2020 fourth-rounder) than in Jackson (and with Ballage moving on to Pittsburgh via free agency), could work in Kelley's favor.

Fantasy Downside
The Chargers drafted running back Larry Rountree in the sixth round with the thought of him serving as a key special teamer in his rookie season. But USA Today reports that in the eyes of NFL evaluators, the team might have something more valuable.

2021 Bottom Line
Whatever the case, fantasy managers looking to invest in the second piece of this backfield should only do so if they're confident the role is there.

LAC RB Joshua Kelley - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs New England

We can’t be terribly surprised that Austin Ekeler’s return also brought the return of a usable Joshua Kelley. Kelley finished last week against Buffalo with seven carries for 35 yards and one touchdown, his second of the season. The LA backfield returned to the Ekeler-Kelley combo, however, this time Ekeler significantly out-touched and out-produced Kelley. Pending the health of Kalen Ballage and Troymaine Pope, Kelley’s usability will be limited the rest of this season. He’s at best an RB3 this week.

LAC RB Joshua Kelley - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 vs New York Jets

Kelley once again busted last week against Miami, as he ran the ball seven times for 21 yards. It seems like any back with the exception of Kelley who is in the Charger backfield is instantly productive. Not even in the most desperate situations should Kelley not be started.

LAC RB Joshua Kelley - Week 10 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 at Miami

Kelley once again left much to be desired last week against Las Vegas as he carried the ball nine times for 28 yards and caught all five of his targets for 31 yards. In a game where Justin Jackson and Troymaine Pope were out with injury, it was practice squad call ups Kalen Ballage and undrafted rookie Gabe Nabers who managed the score touchdowns out of the backfield. With Kelley unable to make the most of his opportunities, it is clear he is nothing more than a desperation RB3 moving forward.

LAC RB Joshua Kelley - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 vs Las Vegas

Kelley was demoted to third-string back last week as he finished with fewer touches than Justin Kelley and Troymaine Pope. Kelley ran the ball seven times for 32 yards and his lone reception was for -7 yards, not a very effective day for Kelley. He’ll continue to get some opportunity in this rotating Charger backfield, and that might be more so with Pope expected to miss Week 9 with a concussion. Keep Kelley as RB3 in this divisional matchup against the Raiders.
