Scouting report

LAC RB Joshua Kelley - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 at Denver

Kelley once again had an uninspiring performance as the lead back in the Charger offense, as he finished last week with 12 carries for 29 yards and caught all five of his targets for 24 yards. Even though Kelley led the backfield in touches over veterans Justin Jackson and Troymaine Pope, he didn’t have much production to show for it. It’s clear Kelley operated best a complementary back who fits Austin Ekeler’s skill set, but it’s disappointing to see Kelley not completely take over this backfield.

Week 8 brings Kelley’s toughest matchup yet as the Denver Broncos are ranked second in aFPA to RBs this season. Expect middling RB2 numbers from Kelley in this one.

LAC RB Joshua Kelley - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs Jacksonville

Kelley disappointed in his starting role prior to the bye week, as he finished with 11 carries for 29 yards and caught his only target for nine yards. Kelley just was not ready to take over this backfield. Instead, it was the veteran Justin Jackson who handled the bulk of targets through the air and was far more efficient on the ground. As things stand now, Kelley will retain his role prior to Ekeler’s injury with Jackson being the one whose role is elevated. That keeps Kelley on the RB3 radar against the Jaguars.

LAC RB Joshua Kelley - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at New Orleans

Kelley had a less than impressive showing last week against Tampa Bay, as he only ran nine times for seven yards and caught all three of his targets for 26 yards. Kelley also lost a fumble in a game where Austin Ekeler went down, and Kelley had every opportunity to shine. Kelley had done well in spurts this season, however for the foreseeable future, he will have more touches as he will be locked in a time share with Justin Jackson.

With an unclear role for both backs, Kelley should be able to produce enough this week to stay on the radar as a RB2/FLEX. If Kelley can take over the passing down work Ekeler has left vacant, he has all the makings of a league winner this season.

LAC RB Joshua Kelley - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Tampa Bay

Kelley was regulated to backup duty in Week 3 as he finished the game with right carries for 43 yards and caught both of his targets 9 yards. With Austin Ekeler seeing heavy targets in the passing game, Kelley didn’t have much of a chance to establish any meaningful work. The negative game scripts in these Los Angeles games might ultimately phase out Kelley’s fantasy value and make him harder to trust on a weekly basis. View Kelley as a RB3 against Tampa.

LAC RB Joshua Kelley - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Carolina

Kelley is no longer Ekeler’s backup, rather the “Thunder” to Ekeler’s “Lightning.” Once again handling a healthy volume of touches, Kelley finished Week 2 with 23 carries for 64 yards and two receptions for 49 yards. Kelley’s grinding style in-between the tackles will keep his YPC low, but it will also make him crucial in goalline situations.

He was a great matchup against Carolina this week in which he should still see plenty of volume. Kelley makes a fine RB2 in this one

LAC RB Joshua Kelley - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Kansas City

Kelley proved to be the perfect complement to Austin Ekeler on the ground as he finished with a very efficient running line of 12-60-1. Kelley’s role as the goal line and short-yardage back seems to be real, giving him some standalone appeal as Ekeler’s backup. It may only be Week 1, but Kelley’s reviews from camp coupled with his usage in Week 1 make him a viable FLEX option in deeper leagues against Kansas City.

LAC RB Joshua Kelley - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Cincinnati

For those of you who went with the zero RB strategy in your drafts, Joshua Kelley is probably a guy you snagged. Reports out of camp have Kelley already beating out incumbent Justin Jackson for goal line work, making Kelley an intriguing prospect. However, we do not know how this offense will look with Tyrod Taylor under center so it’s too early to see if this offense can successfully support two RBs. Keep Kelley on your bench for this one if you can, he should be viewed as an RB4 for the season opener.
