Scouting report

by Brandon Niles

ARI TE John Carlson - Week 11, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 – John Carlson vs. Detroit
John Carlson caught two passes for 33 yards last week against the Rams, but he was targeted four times. This is top production for the veteran journeyman, and fantasy owners shouldn’t expect more than two to five points in any given week. Carlson should remain on the waiver wire in most leagues.

ARI TE John Carlson - Week 10, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 – John Carlson vs. St. Louis

John Carlson had only two catches and 19 yards against the Cowboys on Sunday, but he did score his first touchdown on the season and helped the Cardinals beat Dallas to extend their win total to seven on the year.

Carlson remains the starter in Arizona, but the Cardinals have not used their tight end enough to warrant serious fantasy consideration. Fantasy owners should leave him on waivers.

ARI TE John Carlson - Week 9, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 – John Carlson vs. Dallas
John Carlson had two catches for 16 yards against the Eagles on Sunday, but he was targeted six times. He remains the starter, but the Cardinals don’t seem to be targeting the tight end position enough to make him a viable fantasy option. Owners should have better options than Carlson and should leave him on the waiver wire.

ARI TE John Carlson - Week 8, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 – John Carlson vs. Philadelphia
John Carlson had two catches and 20 yards last week against the Raiders as the Cardinals pulled off a nice victory to retain possession of the top spot in the NFC West. Carlson is a nice veteran presence on the team, but his four targets and 20 yards last week seem like par for the course from the former Seahawk and Viking. He hasn’t shown he can produce enough to provide fantasy value, and there’s no reason to assume that’s going to change.

ARI TE John Carlson - Week 7, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 – John Carlson vs. Oakland
John Carlson had four catches and 14 yards against Washington last week and he remains the Cardinals starting tight end. However, he also remains the same John Carlson he’s always been – a player who doesn’t do much for fantasy owners. There’s no reason to expect that to change this week, even against an easy Oakland opponent, and his presence at the top of the depth chart kind of ruins it for the other tight ends on the roster. Fantasy owners should look elsewhere.

ARI TE John Carlson - Week 6, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 – John Carlson vs. Washington
John Carlson had two catches for 19 yards against the Broncos last week, and he continues to put up modest numbers at the tight end position while holding off competition from rookie Troy Niklas and holdover Rob Housler. This week, he faces a Washington defense that has struggled in recent weeks, but despite the matchup, Carlson has not shown an ability to become a consistent fantasy producer and should remain on waivers. Expect another 1-4 catches and 15-45 yards.

ARI TE John Carlson - Week 5, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 – John Carlson vs. Denver

John Carlson had three catches for 33 yards off the bye and has become a reliable crutch for whoever is slinging it in Arizona. Carlson has never really blossomed into the top tight end he was expected to become early in his career though, and there’s no reason to think he’ll be a consistent weekly fantasy starter now, regardless of his spot at the top of the depth chart.

Against the Broncos this week, Carlson should get some looks, but another 30 yard stat line or so is the most probable outcome. He should remain on waivers.
