ARI TE John Carlson - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 – John Carlson vs. San Francisco
John Carlson continues to be the main tight end in Arizona, but that just hasn’t yielded top fantasy numbers as of yet. He finished last week’s game against the Giants with only two catches for 43 yards and that looks to be about the best yardage total fantasy owners can expect from the veteran. He’ll continue to be pushed by the young guys on the roster, and he’s never been a legitimate fantasy option at the position in his career. He should remain on waivers.

ARI TE John Carlson - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 – John Carlson vs. New York Giants
John Carlson started against the Chargers last week and had one catch for 20 yards. It was a very impressive catch and throw into a small window of zone coverage, but the lack of targets and opportunities spells more of the same for a Cardinals passing offense that has failed to get any kind of consistent production from the tight end position for years. Until we see it, none of the Cardinals tight ends, including the starter Carlson, are worth having on a fantasy roster.

ARI TE John Carlson - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 – John Carlson vs. San Diego
Veteran John Carlson surprised everyone by emerging from the preseason as the top guy on the Cardinals depth chart at the tight end position, particularly after two lackluster seasons in Minnesota. The 30 year old veteran still is not a viable fantasy option at this time however, as he’ll continue to battle Rob Housler and rookie Troy Niklas for his job throughout the season, with all three likely getting snaps throughout the season. Until one of these guys establishes himself as the clear starter, none are worth rostering.

ARI TE Carlson John - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
HC Bruce Arians said at the Scouting Combine back in February that he wanted a tight end who can block. He got one this offseason, when the Cardinals agreed to a two-year deal with John Carlson. The veteran, who turned 30 in May, has hauled in 177 passes for 1,906 yards and 14 TDs in six NFL seasons. Before joining Minnesota in 2012, Carlson had a four-season stint in Seattle (2008-2011).

Fantasy Downside
Carlson was cut by the Vikings earlier this offseason, going down as one of the early busts of free agency in recent years. For the five-year, $25 million contract they Vikings gave him two years ago, he caught just 40 passes. Carlson also had at least three concussions during that span and considered retiring because of them.

Bottom Line
Despite the negatives, there's a major positive here: Carlson appears to be on top of the depth chart at tight end. According to ESPN.com, Carlson has been making catches all camp. The question for fantasy owners is whether he'll be a blocker first and receiver second. We suspect the former.
