Scouting report

CIN RB Joe Mixon - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at New York Jets
Joe Mixon is getting the touches to start the season. Week 1 he had 34, and Week 2 he had 22. After an impressive opener, he took a step back with only 83 total yards. He has not scored a touchdown the first two games.

Mixon faces the Jets who are dead last in aFPA to running backs. In the meeting with Jets last season, he had 81 total yards and two touchdowns. This is a very good matchup for Mixon if he gets 25+ touches.

Start Mixon as a solid RB1 in all leagues and formats. The Bengals need to fix their offensive line issues and if they do, Mixon will have a top-5 fantasy game.

CIN RB Joe Mixon - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Dallas Cowboys
It was a good start for Joe Mixon as far as fantasy is concerned, especially if you are in a PPR league. He rushed for 82 yards and caught 7 passes for 63 yards. The negative was he didn't get in the end zone. The positive is he had 34 touches which was second most in the NFL for Week 1. Mixon did get banged up a little but was not listed on the injury list.

Mixon faces the Cowboys who are ranked 2nd in aFPA to running backs after one week, but Dallas did look good on the defensive side of the ball.

Start Mixon in all leagues in formats although the matchup is not as favorable as last week. He ranks a solid RB1 for Week 2 and should get around 22-25 touches on Sunday.

CIN RB Joe Mixon - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers
Joe Mixon is healthy and should put up big numbers for the Bengals this season, starting in Week 1. He was very effective when he got 20 or more touches and that amounted to quality fantasy numbers.

A fast start should happen, as the Steelers' run defense was one of the worst in the NFL and they were ranked 23rd in aFPA to running backs. Mixon ran for a season-high 165 yards last season against Pittsburgh and had 90 rushing yards in the other meeting. He did have 5 receptions in those two games but the yardage wasn't prominent.

Start Mixon as a solid RB1 for Week 1. Although Pittsburgh's defense overall is pretty good, we don't see the run defense improving that much in 2022. Mixon should be over 100+ total yards from scrimmage on Sunday and a couple TDs is not out of the question.

CIN RB Joe Mixon - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
Last preseason, many fantasy managers were nervous about Joe Mixon because he missed the last 10 games of the 2020 season with a foot injury. The ones who ended up drafting him were rewarded. He was a true workhorse, rushing the ball 292 times for 1,205 yards and 13 touchdowns. Mixon was also involved in the passing game with 42 receptions for 314 yards. It was the first time he eclipsed the 1,200 rushing yard and 300 receiving yard marks in his career. The Bengals did put some money into an average offensive line so that could help Mixon overall.

2022 Fantasy Downside
The Bengals might have one of the best receiving corps in the NFL and their quarterback is heading towards the top tier at his position. So, the Bengals could become somewhat enamored with their passing attack and that could adversely affect Mixon's overall numbers. Don't be surprised if he has less carries and yardage this year.

2022 Bottom Line
As long as he is healthy, Mixon will be a true three-down running back. Although his fantasy numbers could take a step back, he still ranks as a solid RB1 to start the season and should be taken at the end of the first round or early second round of your draft as the No. 8 overall fantasy running back.

CIN RB Joe Mixon - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. Kansas City
Joe Mixon continues to be a solid fantasy running back and scored his 13 rushing touchdown and third receiving touchdown of the season last Sunday. He also had 24 touches for 135 yards. When Mixon gets the ball, he produces so it's just a matter of touches each week,

Mixon will face the Chiefs who are ranked 11th in aFPA to running backs. We could see a shootout in this game as both offenses have been red-hot. That's good news for Mixon owners.

Start Mixon as a solid RB1 for Week 17. As long as he has 20+ touches, he should be in good shape for quality production.

CIN RB Joe Mixon - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Baltimore
Joe Mixon had 18 touches for 60 yards last week. Unfortunately, this number is lower than we think it should be. The running game was one of the NFL's best when Mixon had back-to-back 30+ touch games. Mixon has been battling an ankle injury but fully practiced on Thursday and should be good to go on Sunday.

In the first meeting with the Ravens, Mixon had 12 carries for 59 yards in a game which the Bengals threw for over 400 yards. Baltimore is a tough matchup ranked 2nd in aFPA to running backs.

This should be a tough AFC North battle and we think Mixon will get tough yards but only enough to rank him a high-end RB2 for Week 16.

CIN RB Joe Mixon - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Denver
After getting the ball 30+ times for two straight weeks, Joe Mixon's touches have fallen off and so have his fantasy stats. In the last two games, he has had 37 carries for 112 yards and has barely been involved in the passing game. He also failed to score a touchdown against San Francisco. It was the first game he didn't reach the end zone since Week 6.

Mixon will face the Broncos who are ranked 23rd in aFPA to running backs. Even with the favorable matchup, we worry that the touches have fallen over the last two weeks. Whether it is to save wear and tear on Mixon's body or just spreading the ball around, it has affected his numbers.

Start Mixon for Week 15 but only as a low-end RB1 against Denver. It would help if he would get more involved in the passing game as he has had 7 targets in the last four games.
