Scouting report

DAL TE Jason Witten - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs New York Giants
Jason Witten returns to the NFL after a year off in the TV booth. He'll be the starter for the Cowboys but Blake Jarwin will see plenty of snaps at tight end too. There is no doubt about Witten's pedigree, but those numbers he put up in the past will be hard to come by in 2019.

Witten will face the Giants, who were 15th in aFPA to tight ends in 2018. We don't expect much for the veteran so he should not be in your starting lineup and if you do have him on your roster, he is on the outside of even being a TE2 for Week 1.

DAL TE Jason Witten - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Philadelphia Eagles

Jason Witten was targeted 9 times last week, his highest total since Week 5. He did record 5 receptions but only for 39 yards. That has been an issue this season as the yardage totals have been low even when Witten has had a lot of catches in a game.

He will face the Eagles this week, who are ranked 15th in aFPA to tight ends. The Cowboys will play their starters but don't expect much of an offensive explosion. Keep Witten on the bench as a high-end TE2.

DAL TE Jason Witten - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Seattle Seahawks

Jason Witten actually had 4 catches for 47 yards last week, which doesn't seem like much, but it was actually a vast improvement from the previous two weeks when he had 2 receptions. He was held out of the end zone for the first time in three games, but it was an overall better performance.

Witten will face the Seahawks this week, who are ranked fourth in aFPA to tight ends. With the tough matchup and recent performances, he only ranks as a TE2 for Week 16 and should remain on the bench.

DAL TE Jason Witten - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Oakland Raiders

For the third time in the last four games, Jason Witten only had 1 reception and he was only targeted twice last week. There just hasn't been the consistency there for the veteran tight end that we have seen throughout his career.

Witten will face the Raiders this week, who are ranked 19th in aFPA to tight ends. Even with the slightly favorable matchup, we have an issue with Witten's fantasy numbers over the past month. He only ranks as a high-end TE2 for Week 15, so keep him on the bench.

DAL TE Jason Witten - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at New York Giants

Jason Witten scored a touchdown last Thursday against Washington. However, it was his only reception of the game. It has been a roller coaster for Witten this season. In the last five games, he had 1, 7, 1, 7, and 1 reception. So, he has become hard to predict. We do know his yardage totals are down from recent seasons and he only has 4 touchdowns this season.

Week 14 could be one of those 7-reception games as Witten faces a Giants defense ranked 30th in aFPA to tight ends. Start him in all formats as a low-end TE1.

DAL TE Jason Witten - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. Washington Redskins

Jason Witten had a decent game on Thanksgiving with 7 receptions for 44 yards. The difference this year compared to recent seasons is consistency. Witten has disappeared in certain games which has not been the norm in his career.

The Cowboys face Washington this week, who are ranked 29th in aFPA to tight ends. In the first meeting with Washington, Witten had 3 receptions for 31 yards. This might be a good week to bench Witten if you have a better option. He rates as a high-end TE2 and the Cowboys offense has been struggling.

DAL TE Jason Witten - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs. Los Angeles Chargers

For the second time in three weeks, Jason Witten was targeted only once and that produced 1 reception. The Cowboys offense has struggled without suspended RB Ezekiel Elliott and that trend might continue over the next month.

The matchup is tough for Witten as the Chargers are ranked first overall in the NFL in aFPA to tight ends. The inconsistency of 2017 for Witten has been different than most of his career. If you have him in a PPR league, he still might worth a start, but in standard leagues he rates as a high-end TE2 for Week 12.
