Scouting report

by Chris Kucharski

DAL TE Jason Witten - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 at New York Giants
Jason Witten had four catches for 33 yards and has fluctuated with his targets and receptions most of the season. The inconsistency doesn't help his fantasy value and that big game he used to have several times a season doesn't seem to be happening in his return to the NFL.

The Giants are 14th in aFPA to tight ends, but we don't expect much more than the three catches he had in the first meeting with New York to open the season. Witten ranks a TE2 for Week 9 so keep him on the bench.

DAL TE Jason Witten - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs Philadelphia
Jason Witten had five receptions for 57 yards last week as he takes a bigger role in the Dallas passing game with wide receivers Amari Cooper and Randall Cobb out this week. Witten will face the Eagles who are 22nd in aFPA to tight ends.

Even with the increased attention and a decent matchup, Witten still only ranks a TE2 for Week 7 and Sunday Night Football. He should remain on your bench.

DAL TE Jason Witten - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at New York Jets
Despite a huge passing night for the Cowboys offense, Jason Witten's numbers were the norm for him this season. He caught three balls for 29 yards. There is little doubt Witten will be a part of the offense, just not like he had been during his prime.

The Cowboys face the Jets who are 10th in aFPA to tight ends. Don't expect much from the veteran as he is ranked as a TE2 for Week 6.

DAL TE Jason Witten - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs Green Bay
Jason Witten has had exactly four targets in every game this season and his overall numbers have reflected that trend. Witten is on the field about 68% of the offensive snaps so he is still part of the Dallas offense in a positive way.

Witten faces the Packers who are 15th in aFPA to tight ends. With the targets remaining fairly low, Witten still ranks a solid TE2 pretty much as he has all season. Keep him on the bench for Week 5.

DAL TE Jason Witten - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at New Orleans
Jason Witten had three catches for 54 yards last week. His receiving yardage total was the highest of the year, but it was also the first game of the season he did not score a touchdown. Witten is definitely relevant but not like he was in his prime.

The Saints are up next and they have been very good against tight ends this season, ranked fourth in aFPA to the position.

Witten's value will be if he can get in the end zone and with a great offense in Dallas, he will get red zone opportunities. Overall, he ranks a TE2 for Week 4 and still considered depth on fantasy rosters.

DAL TE Jason Witten - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs Miami
Jason Witten wasn't drafted in every league, but he has shown value through two weeks with his ability to get in the end zone. So far, he has only been targeted eight times which has produced seven receptions for 40 yards, but a touchdown each game.

Witten has a great matchup for Week 3 against Miami who was 28th in aFPA to tight ends last year and hasn't stopped anyone defensively yet.

No doubt Witten's stock has risen, especially with WR Michael Gallup out. He ranks a TE2 for Week 3, but should be considered a waiver wire pickup if he keeps scoring touchdowns. Keep him on the bench against the Dolphins.

DAL TE Jason Witten - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Washington
It was a nice homecoming for Jason Witten as he returned to the Cowboys and reached the end zone. He was targeted four times which should be the norm on a weekly basis.

It's a tough matchup in Week 2 as the Redskins are fourth in aFPA to tight ends. A bigger problem for Witten is that he shares times (and targets) with Blake Jarwin who also scored last Sunday. Witten is a low-end TE2 for Week 2 so keep him on your bench as depth.
