CAR K Graham Gano - Week 4, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 – Graham Gano vs. Baltimore
Graham Gano made both of his field goal attempts last week against the Steelers in what turned out to be an ugly game on both sides of the ball for Carolina. This week, the Panthers face a stingy Baltimore defense that should continue to make things hard on the Panthers still-developing offense. With the Panthers’ running game in disarray and Cam Newton looking only quasi-healthy, it’s hard to imagine Gano getting enough opportunities to warrant a spot in fantasy lineups for the time being.

CAR K Graham Gano - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 – Graham Gano vs. Pittsburgh

Graham Gano connected on all three field goal attempts as the Panthers crushed the Lions last week, and he’ll be counted on again this week against a Pittsburgh team that is reeling after a demoralizing loss to the Ravens a week ago.

Gano has been a solid player for the last year, and with the Panthers offense starting to show some signs of life, it’s possible the kicking game benefits. We have Gano ranked just outside our top ten this week, making him a solid option for fantasy owners needing to grab a waiver wire kicker.

CAR K Graham Gano - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 – Graham Gano vs. Detroit

Graham Gano went two of three last week, making a couple of chip shots, but missing a 48 yard field goal in the fourth quarter that would’ve given the Panthers a little more breathing room against the Bucs.

This week, Gano will face the Lions. Detroit played well against the Giants on Monday night, but the Giants looked horrible, so it’s hard to gauge exactly how good the Lions defense really was. We expect a regression to the mean this week out of Detroit, meaning the Panthers should move the ball better than the Giants did. Still, Carolina isn’t exactly an offensive juggernaut, making Gano a middle-of-the-road option and not worth changing up your current kicker strategy.

CAR K Graham Gano - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 – Graham Gano vs. Tampa Bay
Graham Gano is coming off his most efficient season as a pro. He made 24 of 27 field goals last year, including six from over 50 yards. Unfortunately, 27 field goal attempts was good for only 20th in the NFL last year, and with the Panthers offense dealing with tremendous turnover at the WR and OL positions, it’s hard to envision a more potent attack forming.

Good for Gano getting a new contract in the offseason, but even against the Bucs in Week 1, it’s hard to recommend starting a kicker for the Panthers. He should probably remain on waivers.

CAR K Graham Gano - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Graham Gano signed a big contract extension (for a kicker) this offseason, so the Panthers have clearly committed to him after he had a career year in Carolina with nearly 89% accuracy on his field goals. With kickers, job security is half the battle, and Gano should have no problems maintaining his position as the main guy in Carolina.

Fantasy Upside
Gano not only booted nearly 89% last season, he also connected with over half of his field goals (13 of 24) from distances beyond 40 yards. This included going six for six on field goals from over 50 yards! Gano has always had a big leg, but this past season was the first time he’s been able to show the ability to consistently convert those big time kicks through the uprights.

Fantasy Downside
The downside with Gano is that the Panthers are a low scoring team (18th in the league last year in points per game) that lost key members on the offensive line as well as their top four receivers in the offseason. Last year, Gano only had 27 field goal attempts, and while he converted 24 of them, his number of attempts ranked only tied for 24th in the league. If the Panthers offense struggles, then it’s unlikely Gano gets more opportunities than he did last year.

Bottom Line
Gano is a strong-legged kicker coming into his own as a mainstay in Carolina, and his big contract gives him stability. However, the inconsistent Panthers offense, and the questions surrounding what was undoubtedly a painful offseason on that side of the ball make Gano a fringe fantasy option ultimately. We have him ranked 19th on our board, well outside of starter zone for fantasy owners. Keep an eye on the Panthers offense for improvements, but at this point, it’s hard to advise drafting a kicker on such a low scoring team.
