Scouting report

CAR WR D.J. Moore - Week 10 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 at Pittsburgh Steelers

D.J. Moore had a disappointing game against the Buccaneers last week, posting only one catch on two targets for 16 yards. He did have a 32-yard run, but in a great matchup following three straight games with five or more targets, it was frustrating for fantasy owners hoping he’d arrived.

This week, Moore is a risky option despite a nice matchup against the Steelers. Pittsburgh has allowed 11 touchdowns to the wide receiver position so far this year, although they rank fifth in yards allowed per pass attempt – meaning teams generally do their damage against them in short and intermediate routes. That doesn’t help Moore’s chances for big plays. Moore has some upside, but he’s a boom-bust option and should only be considered as a desperation starter in large leagues.

CAR WR D.J. Moore - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

D.J. Moore had a great game last week against the Ravens, catching five passes for 90 yards and adding 39 more yards on the ground. It was the best game of the season for the rookie out of Maryland, and a great sign for the Panthers offense and for fantasy owners who have been stashing him away all year.

This week, Moore has a good chance to follow up his breakout game with another nice outing. The Buccaneers have been a sieve on defense, allowing the second-most fantasy points per game to opposing wide receivers this year, and giving up a league-high 33.3 points per game to opposing offenses. Moore is risky as a rookie with only one really good game under his belt, but as a high risk, high reward option in deep leagues, he could really pan out for fantasy owners willing to gamble.

CAR WR D.J. Moore - 2018 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside

D.J. Moore might be the best rookie receiver in this class. He should earn a starting job opposite Devin Funchess, and he’s used to shouldering the load on offense after being responsible for 53 percent of his team’s passing yards last season. Moore has a rare blend of speed and athleticism and will get every opportunity to contribute early for a Panthers offense that was sorely lacking weapons last year.

Fantasy Downside

While this trend has been bucked in the modern era, rookie receivers are often unreliable for immediate fantasy production. Moore also goes to a team that has struggled to feed two fantasy receivers consistently during Cam Newton’s tenure at quarterback, and Funchess is still lurking on the other side of the field. Additionally, Greg Olsen and Christian McCaffrey will continue to eat up targets.

2018 Bottom Line

Moore is too risky to put a lot of draft capital into in redraft leagues, but he should be considered a top target in dynasty formats. In most leagues, he’s a bench guy with high upside, making his 12th-round price tag very appealing.
