CHI RB David Montgomery - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
David Montgomery finished 10th among running backs in total touches last season, despite missing four games. He averaged over 20 touches per game (which is something he also accomplished in 2020). And he managed to do that even with a talented Khalil Herbert behind him on the depth chart. Montgomery should continue to have a heavy workload heading into 2022 as he’ll likely have a similar role to last season. Not only does Montgomery have a high number of touches, but he turns it into production with 1,150 scrimmage yards in 13 games last season (88 yards per game). He was RB16 in average scoring among running backs with at least 10 games played in 2021.

2022 Fantasy Downside
While the massive amount of touches are nice, it only works if Montgomery is able to get production out of it. The Bears have the lowest-ranked offensive line in 4for4’s Justin Edwards’ rankings. And that showed last season as Montgomery averaged 3.8 yards per carry. With the Bears’ weak passing attack, teams will likely focus in on stopping the run, which will make life difficult for Montgomery. Chicago could also look to utilize their other running backs more this season as Herbert showed a lot of promise as a rookie. Chicago also brought in 2020 3rd-round pick Darrynton Evans this offseason, who won’t have a huge role, but could still cut into Montgomery’s touches.

2022 Bottom Line
While Montgomery will be the RB1 in this offense, we don’t anticipate him averaging 20 touches per game for a third consecutive year. It’ll likely be down more around 15, which is still high, but in a bad offense, every touch matters. Montgomery has some obvious downsides, but that almost works in his favor. Montgomery’s ADP has dipped low enough to where he's a decent value. He’s a 25-year-old running back (which is usually when we see that position peak) who should see at least 250 touches. Even though it’s not an ideal situation, Montgomery has high-end RB2 potential, and should be viewed as a mid-range RB2 option heading into 2022.

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 vs. New York Giants

David Montgomery didn't run very well last week (2.1 ypc on 21 carries), but he was still productive thanks to his contributions as a receiver. Montgomery finished 7-61 on nine targets in addition to his 45 yards and a touchdown on the ground. It's a perfect example of how a back can be productive if they simply get enough volume, and Montgomery certainly got that with 28 touches. Expect another game with likely 20+ touches from Montgomery this week in a solid matchup vs. the Giants. There's a chance Montgomery has another productive receiving game as the Giants have given up the 6th-most receiving yards to running backs this year. Montgomery should be viewed as a strong RB1 play in Week 17.

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Seattle Seahawks

David Montgomery was OK last week, rushing 18 times for 60 yards and catching 5-of-6 targets for 23 yards. He failed to score a touchdown and coughed up the ball on a fumble, which gave him a modest fantasy output. Montgomery has struggled to find the endzone since the Bears' Week 10 bye, scoring just once on 103 touches. Other than his lack of touchdowns, Montgomery has been solid, averaging about 90 scrimmage yards per game since the bye. And PPR owners will be happy to see Montgomery averaging 4.6 receptions in that span. Montgomery should continue to be productive this week in a favorable matchup vs. the Seahawks. Seattle has given up the second-most average fantasy points to running backs, including a league-high 25 touchdowns. With Montgomery's heavy workload in a favorable matchup, we like him as a low-end RB1 this week.

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Minnesota Vikings

David Montgomery had an OK game last week. He ran just 10 times for 42 yards and caught 6-of-7 targets for 39 yards with no touchdowns. Montgomery has suddenly become more involved as a receiver, seeing 16 targets in his last two games. He'll look to continue that success this week in a decent matchup against the Vikings. Montgomery, along with seven other Bears players, was held out of practice Thursday with a non-COVID illness, so his health is worth monitoring heading into a Monday night matchup. But assuming he'll be ready to go by Monday, Montgomery should be viewed as a low-end RB1 or a high-end RB2.

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 @ Green Bay Packers

David Montgomery exploded last week against the Cardinals, rushing 21 times for 90 yards and a touchdown. He also added eight receptions for 51 yards on nine targets. Montgomery has been the workhorse in the Bears backfield since returning from injury. He doesn't always turn in great production, but he does pretty much always get enough touches to make him a safe play. He could struggle a bit this week in a tough matchup against the Packers. Green Bay has given up the seventh-fewest rush yards and the eighth-fewest receiving yards to opposing running backs this year. But like we mentioned earlier, he should see at least 15 touches, giving him a solid baseline of production. He should be viewed as a solid RB2 play in Week 14.

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. Arizona Cardinals

David Montgomery struggled to get going last week as he ran 17 times 46 yards (2.7 ypc) for no touchdowns. He also caught all three of his targets for 28 yards. While the production wasn't really there, the volume was, which is a good thing. Montgomery has seen 15 or more touches in six of his seven starts this season, which is nice consistency. We'd expect him to get at least 15 touches again this week in a favorable matchup against the Cardinals. Arizona has mostly struggled to contain running backs in the pass game, allowing the eighth-most receptions to the position. Montgomery can be viewed as a safe RB2 option in Week 13.

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 at Detroit Lions

David Montgomery didn't have a great game last week, rushing 14 times for 58 yards and catching just one target for nine yards. But he did absolutely dominate the backfield by playing 95% of the offensive snaps, with other Bears' backs totaling one touch. It's a little surprising the Bears didn't incorporate Khalil Herbert at all following his success with Montgomery sidelined, but it's clear there will be no timeshare in this backfield. That'll be a good thing for Montgomery owners heading into Week 12 as he draws a favorable matchup vs. the Lions. Detroit is allowing the third-most fantasy points to opposing running backs this year. With Justin Fields and Allen Robinson both likely sidelined, it would make sense for the Bears to lean on a run-heavy script and give Montgomery the ball plenty. We wouldn't be surprised if he saw 20+ touches this week. He should be viewed as a solid RB1 play in Week 12.
