CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 vs. Miami Dolphins

The Bears are going full running back committee with David Montgomery, Khalil Herbert and even QB Justin Fields. It's not affecting Montgomery too much, though, as he still saw 18 touches in Week 8. Although, he did finish with fewer carries than Khalil Herbert (16 to 15). Still, Montgomery was productive, rushing for 53 yards while adding three receptions for 22 yards on three targets. Montgomery's stock has taken a bit of a hit as Herbert gets more involved, but Montgomery has seen 15 carries in three straight games. He should continue to be a fine RB2 play as he gets a decent matchup against the Dolphins in Week 9.

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 at Dallas Cowboys

Despite Justin Fields and Khalil Herbert each seeing double digit carries, David Montgomery was still able to find success, carrying the ball 15 times for 62 yards and a touchdown. Although Montgomery saw no targets out of the backfield, a concerning trend considering he had just one in Week 6. Outside of Week 3 when he left early due to injury, Montgomery played a season-low 56% of the offensive snaps as it appears the Bears are finally giving Khalil Herbert some more touches. Montgomery is trending downwards, but the positive note is that the Bears are a very run-heavy team, so there will likely be enough touches for both him and Herbert. Unfortunately this week, Montgomery will draw a tough matchup against the Cowboys, who have given up the 2nd-fewest average fantasy points to running backs. With the matchup, Montgomery moves in to more of a low-end RB2 play in Week 8.

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 at New England Patriots

David Montgomery continues to serve as the lead back in Chicago, despite the presence of Khalil Herbert. Montgomery saw 15 carries last week while playing on 78% of the offensive snaps. He had an OK game, finishing with 67 yards on the ground. He only saw one target out of the backfield, which he caught for a 13-yard gain. Montgomery should continue to see plenty of touches this week against the Patriots, although yards will likely be hard to come by. New England is allowing the third-fewest average fantasy points to running backs this season. Montgomery is still a decent play due to his volume, but he should be viewed more as a low-end RB2 this week.

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs. Washington Commanders

David Montgomery was able to return from injury last week, despite many expecting an inactive tag. Montgomery struggled to find running room, finishing with 20 yards on 12 carries. But he turned in a decent day of fantasy production with a touchdown and a 4-62 receiving line. Even with his injury and Khalil Herbert's success, Montgomery still owned a large share of this Chicago backfield by playing on 72% of the offensive snaps. He also had 16 touches compared to Herbert's four. Montgomery should continue to see the bulk of the touches as he faces the Commanders in Week 6. It's not a dream matchup, but Washington is far from a lockdown run defense. Montgomery should be a strong RB2 play in Week 6.

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Houston Texans

David Montgomery had an oddly successful game in Week 2. The Bears' offense struggled as a whole, but Montgomery ran 15 times for 122 yards, and added 14 yards on two receptions (and two targets). Montgomery had similar usage as Week 1, he was just much more efficient with his carries. We also saw Montgomery retain his stronghold on this backfield by playing 33 snaps (80%) compared to Khalil Herbert's 8 snaps. Montgomery should have another productive game in Week 2 as he draws a favorable matchup vs. the Texans. It's a small sample size, but the Texans have given up the most rushing yards to running backs this season. Montgomery is a borderline RB1 play in Week 3.

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Green Bay Packers

David Montgomery struggled to get going in Week 1, rushing 17 times for just 26 yards. He was bailed out a bit in PPR formats with three receptions for 24 yards. It's hard to come away upset with the performance, though. It was a rainy mess against a tough 49ers defense. The positive is Montgomery seeing 20 touches while playing 66% of the offensive snaps. He should find more production this week against the Packers, who just gave up 126 yards on the ground to the Vikings in Week 1. Montgomery should be viewed as a solid RB2 play in Week 2.

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. San Francisco 49ers
David Montgomery is in a tough situation in Chicago. He’s the clear RB1, he’s a talented player and he’s involved as both a runner and receiver. The downside, though, is he’s playing behind a poor offensive line. Chicago also lacks a lot of threats, so a lot of attention will be placed on Montgomery by opposing defenses. For Week 1 specifically, he gets a tough matchup against the 49ers who gave up the third-fewest average fantasy points to running backs a year ago. Montgomery should still get around 15 touches, but yards will likely be hard to come by. He should be viewed as a lower-end RB2 heading into Week 1.
