CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Detroit Lions

The return of Khalil Herbert didn't impact David Montgomery much. Montgomery still had 16 carries last week for 62 yards and caught four passes (on four targets) for 22 yards. Although he did lose a fumble. Overall it was a decent performance against a tough Buffalo defense. This week he faces a Lions defense that's given up the 10th-most total rush yards to running backs this season, but given up the 2nd-fewest receiving yards to RBs (with no receiving TDs allowed to RBs, either). We'd expect Montgomery to have a pretty similar performance to last week, which would make him a solid RB2 option for Week 17.

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Buffalo Bills

David Montgomery had a nice performance last week, rushing 12 times for 53 yards and a touchdown while catching three passes for 38 yards and a touchdown. Although things will get interesting this week as the Bears activated Herbert (hip) from injured reserve. Before his injury, Herbert was seeing 10+ touches most weeks which, when split with Justin Fields' carries, didn't leave as many touches for Montgomery. The good news is the Bears are a very run heavy team, so even if it is a three-headed backfield, there will likely be enough touches to go around for everyone. It's not ideal for Montgomery, but he should still remain in that RB2 range. This week he gets an OK matchup vs. the Bills (17th aFPA).

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Philadelphia Eagles

David Montgomery had a solid outing in the Bears' last game in Week 13. He ran for 61 yards and a touchdown while adding four catches for six yards on five targets. Ever since Khalil Herbert was placed on IR, Montgomery has averaged 18 touches per game, which has given him enough volume to be a solid RB2 option most weeks with a ceiling of RB1. Montgomery faces a good Eagles defense this week, but Philadelphia hasn't been shutdown when it comes to allowing fantasy points to running backs (16th aFPA). Montgomery should continue to be a solid RB2 option in Week 15.

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs. Green Bay Packers

David Montgomery looked solid last week, rushing for 79 yards while adding 34 yards on three receptions. With Justin Fields injured, Montgomery is the lone bright spot in Chicago's offense. Assuming Fields misses Week 13 as well, Montgomery should be in line for another game full of touches in a favorable matchup vs. the Packers (26th aFPA). He should see at least 15 total touches and finish with around 100 scrimmage yards with a chance for a touchdown. Montgomery should be viewed as a solid low-end RB1 play in Week 13. When Montgomery faced the Packers earlier in the season he had his only 100-yard rushing game of the season, finishing 122 yards on the ground.

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 at New York Jets

As expected, David Montgomery became the bell cow in Chicago with Khalil Herbert being placed on IR. Montgomery tied (Week 1) a season-high in carries with 17, finishing with 67 yards and a touchdown on the ground. He also caught three of his four targets for 54 yards, giving him 121 scrimmage yards. Montgomery gets a middle-of-the-road matchup this week against the Jets. But with Herbert out again, Montgomery should easily see 15+ touches. He could be leaned on even more considering Justin Fields has a shoulder injury, which could limit the QB's carries. Montgomery should be viewed as a solid RB2 play in Week 12.

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 11 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 11 at Atlanta Falcons

David Montgomery continued to split his touches with Khalil Herbert and quarterback Justin Fields in Week 10. In fact, Montgomery had the fewest rush attempts between the three of them (9). He also once again only saw one target, as his receiving stats have plummeted lately. In total, Montgomery finished with 44 scrimmage yards last week. He should be able to bounce back in Week 11, though. For starters, he gets a great matchup against the Falcons who have given up the 6th-most average fantasy points to RBs. Secondly, Khalil Herbert has been placed on IR, which likely means Montgomery sees an increase in carries. Montgomery is still battling with Fields for carries/rush yards, but the absence of Herbert will be big. Montgomery goes back to high-end RB2 territory in Week 11.

CHI RB David Montgomery - Week 10 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 vs. Detroit Lions

Even with Justin Fields and Khalil Herbert each getting involved in the run game, David Montgomery is still seeing a good chunk of touches. Since returning from injury in Week 5, Montgomery is averaging exactly 16 touches per game, with at least 12 carries in each of those contests. Unfortunately those touches haven't converted much into production. In that same five-game span, Montgomery is averaging 68.6 yards with two total touchdowns, and his role as a receiver has been reduced as he's averaging 1.8 receptions. Those aren't horrible numbers, but it's a noticeable drop off from what he's done over the past two seasons in Chicago. Montgomery has a chance to bounce back this week in a favorable matchup vs. the Lions. Detroit has given up the 7th-most average fantasy points to running backs this season. Montgomery should be viewed as a solid RB2 play for Week 10.
