Scouting report

CHI WR Darnell Mooney - Week 9 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 at Pittsburgh Steelers

Darnell Mooney led the Bears in targets (9) last week and finished 6-64-0. It's only his third game above 50 receiving yards, but it is his fifth game with at least five receptions. Mooney is a high-reception, low-yardage receiver with little chance of scoring considering he has just one touchdown all season. He gets an OK matchup this week against the Steelers, but we're more concerned about the Bears' passing production. Fields is averaging just over 150 pass yards in his starts, which doesn't leave room for much production from his receivers. Mooney should be viewed as a WR3 in Week 9.

CHI WR Darnell Mooney - Week 8 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 vs. San Francisco 49ers

No one on the Bears finished with 50 receiving yards last week, but seven players had at least 10 yards. That's a terrible scenario for Bears receivers in fantasy as passing yards have been few and far between with Justin Fields at QB. Mooney had a modest game, finishing 2-39 on five targets. It's his fourth game (out of seven) below 40 receiving yards this season. He gets an OK matchup this week against the 49ers, who are 16th in schedule-adjusted fantasy points allowed to WRs, but we're more concerned with the Bears offense than any potential matchups. Expect Mooney to finish in that 40-50 receiving yard range, making him a WR4 play in Week 8.

CHI WR Darnell Mooney - Week 7 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Darnell Mooney saw a team-high eight targets last week, finishing 5-45-1. It's his first touchdown of the season, but it continues a fairly productive season for Mooney. Surprisingly, Mooney currently leads the Bears in receptions (25) and receiving yards (306) this season. But every Bears receiver has a fairly limited ceiling as Chicago has three total receiving touchdowns on the year. Still, Mooney has appeal this week in a favorable matchup against the Bucs who are 30th in schedule-adjusted fantasy points allowed to wide receivers. We'd expect the Bears to lean more on the pass this game due to the Bucs' defense, making Mooney a solid WR2 in Week 7.

CHI WR Darnell Mooney - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs. Green Bay Packers

Darnell Mooney settled down in Week 5 after a 100-yard performance in Week 4. Mooney saw five targets, finishing 3-35-0. Mooney's had an up-and-down season as he's technically averaging 52.2 yards per game, but he's only actually hit that mark twice in five games. He also hasn't scored a touchdown this year, which limits his overall ceiling. He gets an OK matchup against the Packers this week, who are 17th in schedule-adjusted fantasy points allowed to wide receivers. Mooney will be a boom-or-bust WR3 option in Week 6 vs. Green Bay.

CHI WR Darnell Mooney - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Las Vegas Raiders

Darnell Mooney had a surprisingly productive game last week, finishing 5-125 on seven targets (he also had a carry for 10 yards). The reason that's surprising is that the Bears only had 209 total passing yards, meaning Mooney accounted for nearly 60% of the team's passing production in Week 4. It's also more receiving yards than he had in the three games prior (101). It's nice seeing Mooney more involved, and it may be a sign of things to come as Week 4 featured a new play caller for the Bears in Bill Lazor. We like Mooney as a lower-end WR3 this week in a tough matchup against the Raiders.

CHI WR Darnell Mooney - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Detroit Lions

Darnell Mooney had just one catch for nine yards last week as the Bears' offense struggled to gain any yardage. Mooney had been showing some promise, with 11 receptions through the first two games, but there's only so much you can do when your quarterback finishes the game with six total completions. We'd expect Mooney to return to being a high-reception, low-yardage receiver this week against the Lions. He should be viewed as a WR4 play in PPR formats this week.

CHI WR Darnell Mooney - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Cleveland Browns

Darnell Mooney is off to a decent start in PPR leagues, seeing seven targets in Week 1 and eight targets in Week 2. He was more productive in the second game, finishing 6-66. Interestingly enough, Mooney saw exactly four targets each from Andy Dalton and Justin Fields, so a change at quarterback shouldn't affect him too much heading into Week 3. It's also worth noting for the second game in a row, Mooney led all receivers in offensive snaps played. As we head into Week 3, we like Mooney to have another high-reception, lower-yardage game in a favorable matchup against the Browns. He should be viewed as a low-end WR3 or solid WR4 play in PPR leagues.
