Scouting report

DET RB D'Andre Swift - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Minnesota Vikings

On paper, D'Andre Swift didn't wow anyone with his numbers against the Commanders. However, he was limited by an ankle injury, so considering that, getting 87 total yards and a touchdown on just seven touches is quite impressive. He looks to be getting better, so he could see closer to his normal workload against the Vikings, keeping him as a low-end RB1/high-end RB2 option this week.

DET RB D'Andre Swift - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Washington Commanders

Even with Jamaal Williams still floating around and getting three carries inside the 5-yard line, D'Andre Swift still finished with 144 rushing yards and a touchdown and finished as RB3 for Week 1. Swift also saw three targets in the passing game.

Washington allowed a rushing touchdown to James Robinson in Week 1. It's a pretty good bet Swift will make it two weeks in a row the Commanders allow one. Even if not, Swift is involved enough in the passing game to warrant top-ten status, despite sharing time with Williams.

DET RB D'Andre Swift - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 vs. Philadelphia Eagles

There has been a lot of love in fantasy circles for D'Andre Swift. It's time to see if that love was warranted. It's also time to see how much of a split there will be in the Detroit backfield between Swift and Jamaal Williams. Even with a split, Goff may be looking Swift's way on passing downs often on Sunday against the Eagles, giving Swift easy RB1 upside and is our No. 8 running back in half-PPR this week.

DET RB D'Andre Swift - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
D’Andre Swift is becoming a PPR monster. In his 11 games before he got hurt in 2021, he caught 56 passes for 439 yards. He saw at least five targets in each of his first nine games of the season, including two games with at least ten targets. Swift looks healthy and should continue to be a huge focal point of the Lions’ offense. Good chance he bumps up from his five rushing touchdowns and two receiving touchdowns, as well.

2022 Fantasy Downside
Swift may not always get you high numbers on the ground, as Jamaal Williams is still around to split the workload (Williams saw 153 carries in 2021). Swift only had one game with 50 rushing yards in his first eight games before his back-to-back 130+-yards games in Weeks 10 and 11.

2022 Bottom Line
Despite the presence of Williams, Swift is set to be a star in fantasy, especially in PPR formats. If you extrapolate his first 11 games to a full season, Swift was on pace for 86 catches. Swift is set to be a top-ten running back and will go in the late-first in some drafts.

DET RB D'Andre Swift - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Seahawks

D'Andre Swift is ready to return to the lineup. He's going up against a Seahawks defense that ranks 30th in schedule-adjusted fantasy points per game, so the matchup is there for solid production. I can't imagine the Lions bringing back Swift without using him at full capacity. Even if his role is somewhat reduced, he should still be good for 15+ touches.

DET RB D'Andre Swift - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 at Falcons

If D'Andre Swift is surprisingly able to return to the lineup, I would suggest starting him because it's unlikely that the Lions would bring him back in a limited role in a lost season. Swift is one of the best pass-catching backs in the league and would immediately return to the RB2 radar in this exploitable matchup.

DET RB D'Andre Swift - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 vs. Bears

D'Andre Swift has been even more of a workhorse since coming out of the bye, combining for 266 rushing yards on 47 carries in two games. He's also caught 6-of-10 targets for five yards. This coincides with the decision to make head coach Dan Campbell the new play-caller, so it's clear that there is a change of philosophy towards a more run-heavy approach. While Swift would be limited by backup quarterback Tim Boyle, you have to love the increased usage here. Having said that, it looks like Jared Goff has a chance to return.

Swift goes up against a Bears defense that ranks 13th in schedule-adjusted fantasy points allowed per game to running backs, so it's not an easy matchup. However, the volume should be there for Swift to remain as an RB1 in this spot. The hope is that we see him catch a few more passes this week. The Lions are 3.5-point home underdogs here, so we could see a competitive game, which bodes well for Swift.
