Scouting report

DAL TE Dalton Schultz - 2022 Fantasy Football Outlook

2022 Fantasy Upside
Dalton Schultz has been one of the most productive tight ends over the past two seasons. Schultz ranks fourth among all tight ends in total fantasy points, and was one of only three tight ends to exceed 200 fantasy points last season. Schultz received the team’s franchise tag, translating to a one-year, $10.9 million deal. The 26-year-old Schultz is highly motivated for a multi-year deal in 2023, and is coming off a season where he ranked third at the position in receptions (78).

2022 Fantasy Downside
Schultz finished as the TE5 in PPR scoring, but is now being drafted exactly in that area. Can he live up to those lofty expectations? With Tony Pollard expected to see an increase in targets, could Schultz lose value despite residing in one of the NFL’s best offenses?

2022 Bottom Line
The loss of wide receivers Amari Cooper and Cedrick Wilson equates to 205 vacated targets. Even if Schultz's efficiency regresses, his target volume should compensate. He ranked Top 10 in deep targets and gathered 14 red zone targets despite playing eight games with former tight end Blake Jarwin. Schultz doesn’t carry the upside of the fantasy tight ends drafted earlier, but his place in the Cowboys offense provides the safest of production floors.

DAL TE Dalton Schultz - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 versus Arizona Cardinals

Dalton Schultz’s demise was greatly exaggerated. Schultz has produced consecutive eight catch games and has touchdowns in each of his past two games. Touchdowns are always icing on the cake, so his 149 receiving yards is the important number. Schultz is finding success despite battling for targets with one of the best receiver trios in football and two backs capable of flipping games in the passing attack. Schultz has volatility because the Cowboys' offense is so good, but it is difficult to imagine his role changing Week 17 with Dallas scoring in bunches of late.

DAL TE Dalton Schultz - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 versus Washington Football Team

Schultz put up his second-best fantasy performance of the season Week 15 and will look to essentially do anything against the Washington Football Team Week 16. Schultz put up 1.4 full-PPR fantasy points in Week 14 against WFT. The WFT defense is a pass funnel, and the hope is Schultz does not see a repeat performance against a poor passing defense. Schultz is a TE1, albeit behind the elite options.

DAL TE Dalton Schultz - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at New York Giants

With a healthy group of wide receivers, Dalton Schultz took his expected hit. For the third consecutive game, Schultz saw his target share drop. His fantasy upside will lie in his red-zone usage and touchdowns.

DAL TE Dalton Schultz - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Washington Football Team

Schultz continues to be a steady presence in the Cowboys' offense, seeing at least five targets in six of seven games since the team’s Week 7 bye. Despite being stuck in the 40-55 yard range most weeks, his upside remains bright because he rarely leaves the field (95% of snaps in four of six games since Week 7) and has little to no competition at the position from his teammates. Fire up Schultz with confidence in at least a floor play in Week 14.

DAL TE Dalton Schultz - Week 13 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 at New Orleans Saints

Injuries to Dallas’s wide receiver corps shined a light on Dalton Schultz Week 12. Schultz caught his first touchdown since Week 4 and has nine receptions for 99 yards the past two games. With Amari Cooper and Cedrick Wilson expected to miss Week 13, Schultz should be one of Dak Prescott's top three or four targets against the New Orleans Saints this week. After not allowing a touchdown to opposing tight ends all season, the Saints have allowed three the past three games, with two going to Dawson Knox Week 12. There is upside with Schultz this week, but with the Saints playing well against tight ends for the majority of the season, a low fantasy floor is in play.

DAL TE Dalton Schultz - Week 12 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 versus Las Vegas Raiders

It should be a busy Thanksgiving for Dalton Schultz, especially if CeeDee Lamb (concussion) is out. The Las Vegas Raiders are 29th in schedule-adjusted fantasy points allowed (aFPA) to tight ends. The Raiders did well to slow down the Bengals' tight ends Week 11, but have been giving to tight ends each week since Week 5, giving up at least 70 receiving yards to the position Weeks 6-10. Start Schultz with confidence due to receiver injuries in Dallas.
