NO RB C.J. Spiller - 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
The Saints signed C.J. Spiller to a four-year, $16 million contract before the 2015 season. He disappointed in his first year with the team, rushing just 36 times for 112 yards and no touchdowns. He did catch 34 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns, but that wasn't anywhere close to the production that owners in PPR leagues were expecting. The Saints gave him $9 million in guaranteed money a year ago so perhaps they won't be quick to release him this preseason. If he can work his way back up the team's depth chart, there's still time for him to carve out a role in the Saints' passing game.

Fantasy Downside
Spiller was listed with the fourth-team offense on the Saints' unofficial depth chart in mid-August. He's not even guaranteed a roster spot with Mark Ingram, Tim Hightower and Marcus Murphy listed ahead of him on the team's depth chart. After proving to be a fantasy and free-agent bust last season, Spiller doesn't appear any closer to a revival in New Orleans.

2016 Bottom Line
The back to own as a handcuff to Ingram is Hightower, not Spiller. Stuck behind three other backs on the Saints' depth chart, Spiller isn't a lock to make the 53-man roster in New Orleans this pre-season. He ranks as our RB51 in PPR formats and holds an ADP of 22.10 in 12-team leagues. It's best to avoid him on draft night.

NO RB C.J. Spiller - Week 16, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Jacksonville
C.J. Spiller rushed twice for two yards while also catching 2-of-5 targets for 16 yards in the Saints Week 15 loss to the Lions. His 26 snaps were a season-high, which tells owners all they need to know about Spiller's involvement (or lack thereof) in Sean Payton's offense. Long considered a 2015 fantasy bust, Spiller is our RB48 for Week 16 and should be avoided.

NO RB C.J. Spiller - Week 15, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 vs. Detroit
C.J. Spiller played just 15 snaps in Week 14 against the Saints, rushing three times for two yards and catching all three of his targets for an additional seven yards in the team's win over the Bucs. Meanwhile, Tim Hightower was employed as Sean Payton's lead back and more than likely will continue to be the Saints' RB1. Avoid Spiller in all formats. He ranks as our RB39 and has been a massive fantasy bust this season.

NO RB C.J. Spiller - Week 14, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 at Tampa Bay
Spiller caught 1-of-2 targets for zero yards in the Saints Week 13 loss to the Panthers. He didn't have a role in Sean Payton's offense heading into last week, but Week 14 might change things after Mark Ingram (shoulder) was placed on season-ending injured reserve. Payton said this week that we'll get "a chance to see" more of Spiller in the final four weeks. But Payton has indicated before that Spiller would have an expanded role, only to use him sparingly on Sundays. Given how this is the first round of the playoffs for many fantasy owners, it's best to leave both Spiller and Hightower on the bench. But if you're desperate, Spiller is ranked as our RB32 in PPR leagues, while Hightower is ranked as our RB41. Play Spiller at your own risk.

NO RB C.J. Spiller - Week 13, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 13 vs Carolina
C.J. Spiller caught 2-of-3 targets for eight yards in the Saints' Week 12 loss to the Texans. He also lost two yards on his lone carry. Ranked as our RB48 for Week 13, avoid Spiller in all formats. He's been one of the bigger fantasy busts this season and is not a viable option for PPR formats despite his skill set.

NO RB C.J. Spiller - Week 12, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 12 at Houston
C.J. Spiller rushed nine times for 23 yards while also adding three receptions for an additional 18 yards in the Saints Week 10 loss to the Redskins. He was more involved after New Orleans played from behind, and even saw a goal-line carry on the first drive of the game. That said, he failed to convert on that opportunity and Tim Hightower wound up having more touches than Spiller despite the latter's expanded role. Ranked as our RB47 in PPR formats, avoid Spiller in Week 12.

NO RB C.J. Spiller - Week 10, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 10 at Washington
C.J. Spiller rushed for just eight yards on two carries while also catching 1-of-2 passes for two yards in the Saints Week 9 loss to the Titans. Fantasy owners who drafted Spiller assuming he would fill the role of former New Orleans running back Darren Sproles in Sean Payton's offense have been burned by Spiller's lack of involvement. He played just six snaps in the loss despite Khiry Robinson being done for the season. Spiller is averaging jut 5.75 touches per game and hasn't had more than 10 touches in a single game all year. Owners who have held on to him this long might as well stash him for at least another week. That said, Spiller has been droppable for weeks now. It's unlikely that his season is about to turn some sort of corner.
