TEN TE Chigoziem Okonkwo - Week 6 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 vs. Baltimore Ravens (London)
Chigoziem Okonkwo was having a disappointing season in terms of usage, up until Week 5 when he suddenly saw nine targets, including two in the red zone. He only managed 33 scoreless yards on five catches, but it was good to see Okonkwo attract some more attention from Ryan Tannehill with Treylon Burks sidelined due to injury. This week Okonkwo and the Titans travel to London to take on the Ravens, whose defense has been the toughest matchup in the league for tight ends thus far. The low-volume nature of the Titans' passing offense and the tough matchup make Okonkwo tough to start in fantasy this week, but his usage should be monitored to see how his targets share develops in the coming weeks.

TEN TE Chigoziem Okonkwo - Week 5 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Indianapolis Colts
Through four games, Chigoziem Okonkwo has only seen 13 total targets and has 10 total receptions. His season-high for receiving yards is 35. Okonkwo's 81% route participation is good for a tight end, but he is simply not earning enough targets to be a viable fantasy option. The Colts have been about average in holding down production of opposing tight ends through four weeks, but Okonkwo will need a larger role in the offense to be considered for starting in fantasy. Look for another option at the position for Week 5.

TEN TE Chigoziem Okonkwo - Week 4 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 vs. Cincinnati Bengals
After playing only 66% of Tennessee's offensive snaps and posting a route participation rate of only 58% in Week 2, Chigoziem Okonkwo's usage numbers bounced back in Week 3 when he played 83% of the snaps and ran a route on 73% of drop backs. That being said, the Titans were completely stymied by the Browns' defense and Okonkwo only caught three balls for seven yards. Okonkwo has yet to find the end zone in 2023 and his best yardage performance was in Week 2 when he managed 35 yards. Okonkwo is simply not seeing enough targets to return any value given how poorly the Titans' offense has played so far. He is not a recommended starting option in Week 4 against the Bengals.

TEN TE Chigoziem Okonkwo - Week 3 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 at Cleveland Browns
Ironically, Chigoziem Okonkwo saw less playing time in Week 2 but turned in a better fantasy day by catching all four targets for 35 yards. Okonkwo remains an interesting prospect but he has only seen six total targets through two games. Given the run-heavy nature of the Tennessee offense, it will be hard for Okonkwo to make any noise in fantasy unless he finds the end zone or someone else suffers a long-term injury. The Browns have been tough on opposing tight ends this year and generally have a strong pass defense. Okonkwo is not a recommended start in Week 3 and is most interesting in dynasty leagues in his current situation.

TEN TE Chigoziem Okonkwo - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 vs. Los Angeles Chargers
Chig Okonkwo did not record a catch and only saw two targets in Week 1, although one of them was a trick play where he was open for a long touchdown only to have Ryan Tannehill overthrow him. Okonkwo looks like the third option for targets behind DeAndre Hopkins, who saw a whopping 13 targets on Sunday, and Treylon Burks. Given how bad Tannehill looked on Sunday, his third option in the passing game is not going to post useful fantasy stats on a regular basis. Okonkwo is still intriguing in the long-term, but we need to see some improvement from Tannehill and the Tennessee offense as a whole before trusting him as a fantasy starter.

TEN TE Chigoziem Okonkwo - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at New Orleans Saints
Chigoziem Okonkwo will start off 2023 matched up against a New Orleans Saints defense that was hard on opposing tight ends last season. The Saints finished as the second-toughest matchup for opposing tight ends as measured by our adjusted fantasy points allowed metric (6.2 aFPA) in 2022. Okonkwo is already dealing with volume concerns given the Titans' run-first offensive philosophy and the addition of DeAndre Hopkins to the receiver room this offseason. Okonkwo's physical abilities make him a big-play threat every snap he's on the field, but it is tough to bet on a player who would be lucky to see more than five targets in Sunday's game. For now, Okonkwo is best left on benches or waivers outside of deeper formats or TE-premium leagues.

TEN TE Chigoziem Okonkwo - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Chigoziem "Chig" Okonkwo entered the NFL as a fourth-round draft pick last year and started off slow, but showed real promise down the stretch as a receiving option for the Titans. Okonkwo logged 32 receptions for 450 yards and three touchdowns on only 46 targets, but showed great efficiency by leading all tight ends in yards per route run at 3.26. Okonkwo's 10.6% target share in 2022 is misleading due to being heavily skewed by his lack of playing time early in his rookie season. That number will almost certainly rise this year, even with the addition of Deandre Hopkins to the offense. Okonkwo will never see huge volume playing in the run-first Titans offense, but his combination of speed and receiving ability make him an interesting option to fill your TE slot without having to expend a high draft pick.

Fantasy Downside
As usual, the Tennessee offense will inevitably be built around workhorse RB Derrick Henry. The Titans finished 31st in plays per game in 2022 at 58.4 and ran the ball 28.6 times per game, good for 11th in the NFL. As an ancillary option in a run-heavy and slow-paced offense, Okonkwo will have to rely heavily on making big plays and scoring touchdowns to be a consistent fantasy option. This is especially true following the addition of Deandre Hopkins this offseason, a move that drops Okonkwo to Ryan Tannehill's third option in the passing game. Okonkwo has a lot of interesting physical tools working in his favor, but he will likely struggle to post consistent TE1 numbers without an injury somewhere else in the passing game due to his modest volume projections.

2023 Bottom Line
Okonkwo's current ADP has him being drafted right on the TE1 borderline in 12-team leagues, which seems like a fair valuation given the concerns surrounding his fantasy profile. Okonkwo demonstrated the ability to be an effective pass catcher in spurts last year with largely backup QB play, but he will have to make due with far fewer targets than the higher-tier players at the position. Okonkwo makes for an interesting gamble if you are committed to going cheap at TE to bolster other positions early in the draft.
