ARI K Chandler Catanzaro - Week 6, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 – Chandler Catanzaro vs. Washington

Chandler Catanzaro has been everything the Cardinals were hoping for in his young rookie season. Against the Broncos this past week, Catanzaro hit both field goal attempts, including a 48 yarder, and he’s now a perfect 11 for 11 on the season. He has the leg strength and accuracy to be a long term solution at the kicker position in Arizona.

This week, the Cardinals face a struggling Washington defense that has looked vulnerable the last two games against the Seahawks and the Giants, two very different offenses. Plaguing Catanzaro is the injury status at the quarterback position for the Cardinals, but his consistency this season makes him a borderline starter in most leagues. 13th in our rankings this week, he’s worth an add if you’re looking for an upgrade.

ARI K Chandler Catanzaro - Week 5, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 – Chandler Catanzaro vs. Denver

Despite a bye week last week, Chandler Catanzaro is still tied for third in the league with nine field goal attempts and he’s made every single one of them so far in his young rookie season. The 3-0 Cardinals have been surprising in just about every aspect of the game, and will hope to continue their early success as one of only two teams still boasting an undefeated record.

This week, Catanzaro faced the Denver defense, which has allowed six field goal attempts in three games prior to the bye last week. It’s hard to know what to expect from this game, and despite the options that Catanzaro has been getting, we have him ranked as one of the least attractive kicker options this week.

ARI K Chandler Catanzaro - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 – Chandler Catanzaro vs. San Francisco

Chandler Catanzaro was a perfect 4-for-4 (pun intended) on field goals last week, including a 49 yarder. The rookie is proving his worth thus far, as he’s perfect on all six attempts this season for the Cardinals.

Against the 49ers this week, it’s hard to imagine the Cardinals getting a whole lot of scoring opportunities, so the rookie continues to be a risky start for fantasy owners. Kicking can be a crapshoot in general, and when in doubt, go with the guys who kick for strong offensive teams, something the Cardinals aren’t boasting right now with a backup quarterback against a stellar inter-division defensive team like the 49ers.

ARI K Chandler Catanzaro - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 – Chandler Catanzaro vs. New York Giants
Chandler Catanzaro made both field goal attempts against the Chargers on Monday night, including a 44 yarder to close out the half. The strong-legged rookie will take on the Giants this week, a team that looked lost against Detroit in Week 1. While Catanzaro has upside, the Cardinals offense did not look dominate to start the season, and we’ll continue to suggest caution relying on the rookie for the time being. We’re projecting him outside starting territory, at 23rd in our rankings.

ARI K Chandler Catanzaro - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 – Chandler Catanzaro vs. San Diego

Chandler Catanzaro is a rookie out of Clemson with a strong leg who won the kicking job in Arizona over veteran Jay Feely. The Cardinals are hoping the cheaper and younger Catanzaro will be an improvement over Feely’s 83 percent field goal kicking last year while saving some bucks.

This week, the Cardinals face a vulnerable Chargers defense, which gives Catanzaro some value, but we still don’t really know what to expect from the Cardinals offense. We have him ranked 13th for the first week of the season, and he should be considered a fringe option at the kicking position.

ARI K Chandler Catanzaro - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Chandler Catanzaro went undrafted in May but the Cardinals made a strong push to sign him, even though veteran Jay Feely and Danny Hrapmann were already on the roster. But as the Cardinals' official website noted, he was been flawless this preseason, connecting on 4-of-4 field goals, 4-of-4 extra points and sending kickoffs deep and high into the end zone. The Cardinals released Feely after the third preseason game -- a game in which Feely missed a field goal. Catanzaro’s stronger leg was the prevailing factor, as he displayed excellent kickoffs despite doing it sparingly in college at Clemson.

Fantasy Downside
We've yet to see him perform on the big, regular-season stage. We suspect HC Bruce Arians, a big believer in competition at the spot, won't hesitate to bring in more if Catanzaro struggles at some point.

Bottom Line
Go ahead and count Catanzaro to the usual crew of lower end fantasy kickers whose primary value is serving a potential bye-week filler.
