Scouting report

CAR RB Cameron Artis-Payne - Week 6, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at New Orleans
Cameron Artis-Payne had a great game against the Bucs on Monday night, carrying the ball 18 times for 85 yards and two touchdowns. While that production was encouraging, it’s unlikely to be repeated any time soon. Jonathan Stewart’s return is looming, and with Cam Newton back in the lineup instead of Derek Anderson, Artis-Payne will likely get less red zone carries.

If Stewart is a no-go and Artis-Payne starts again, then he has some upside against the Saints this week. While the game will likely feature more passing than last week’s low-scoring affair with the Bucs, the Saints have allowed eight rushing touchdowns this year, tied for the most in the league. Newton will steal some of those looks, but in standard or TD-only leagues, if Stewart is out again, Artis-Payne has low-end RB3 value.

CAR RB Cameron Artis-Payne - Week 5, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs. Tampa Bay
Cameron Artis-Payne only got six carries against the Falcons last week, as the Panthers needed to throw the ball all game. Artis-Payne is a two-down runner who does little in the passing game, so in a game like that, he was very disappointing. He only had 12 yards and was only in on 27 percent of the team’s offensive snaps.

This week, Artis-Payne should get a few more opportunities against the Bucs, but may still struggle. The Bucs have been above average in run defense, allowing 95.8 yards and a touchdown on the ground per game this season, and Fozzy Whittaker will continue to be used in the passing game, limiting Artis-Payne’s upside. He has some standard league value as a low-end RB2/RB3 option, but if you can go to someone likely to get more touches, you’re probably better off.

CAR RB Cameron Artis-Payne - Week 4, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Atlanta
Cameron Artis-Payne took over the lead back role for the Panthers last week, but only had 12 carries for 47 yards as the Panthers ended up playing from behind late into the game. While 3.9 yards per carry doesn’t inspire confidence, that was against a top-10 Vikings defense. Artis-Payne remains at least a low-end RB2 option in most leagues, especially with standard scoring formats for as long as Jonathan Stewart is hurt.

This week, he should once again lead the Panthers in carries against a much more vulnerable Atlanta defense. The Falcons are 22nd in the league in rushing yards allowed and they rank 26th in yards per carry allowed with 4.7. He has limited upside since he splits snaps with Fozzy Whittaker and doesn’t play on passing downs, but if he gets another 10-15 carries against this defense, he should be more productive. We have him as a low-end RB2 this week.

CAR RB Cameron Artis-Payne - Week 3, 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs. Minnesota
Cameron Artis-Payne hasn’t been active the past couple of weeks, but he’s set to get the start next week with Jonathan Stewart injured. Artis-Payne averaged 4.6 yards on 33 carries over the final three weeks of last season while Stewart was out, so he has a chance to contribute if he gets extended looks.

This might not be the week to gamble on him however. Minnesota has held opponents to 3.3 yards per carry through the first two weeks of the season and the only rushing touchdown they allowed was to QB Aaron Rodgers last week. With a bad matchup, an unknown workload, and the always present threat of QB Cam Newton to steal touchdowns, Artis-Payne is a risky option who should be considered a low-end RB3 in most leagues.

CAR RB Cameron Artis-Payne - 2016 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
Cameron Artis-Payne didn’t get a lot of chances to shine as a rookie last year, but he averaged 4.1 yards per carry on the 45 attempts he had, and early reports out of Charlotte are that he’s looking more comfortable in pass protection, which might give him more snaps as a sophomore. Artis-Payne is a stout player who runs with a low center of gravity and plays behind Jonathan Stewart, who is 29 years old and has a long history of injuries. He could be a nice handcuff if he beats out Fozzy Whitaker for the backup job.

Fantasy Downside
That backup job should be his, but it’s still possible he’ll share time with Whitaker or even fullback Mike Tolbert if Stewart does get bit by the injury bug again. Also, his goal line potential is limited by playing with Cam Newton. Newton had 29 red zone carries last year. Artis-Payne is also unlikely to steal carries from the highly paid Steward, so his potential is as a handcuff.

2016 Bottom Line
If you draft Stewart and you have the space on your roster to carry a handcuff, Artis-Payne may not be a bad option. However, most leagues don’t afford that luxury, making him more of a mid-season waiver pickup than a draft day target.

CAR RB Cameron Artis-Payne - Week 20, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

NFC Championship vs. Arizona

Cameron Artis-Payne had three carries and a catch for a total of eight yards last week against the Seahawks. The rookie has been relegated to spot duty with Jonathan Stewart healthy again, and with Mike Tolbert also in the mix as a change-of-pace and short yardage player, Artis-Payne should be left alone in most fantasy leagues.

CAR RB Cameron Artis-Payne - Week 19, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 19 vs. Seattle

Cameron Artis-Payne played solidly in the absence of Jonathan Stewart to finish out the season, but the rookie was inconsistent running the ball, showing flashes of ability at times, while largely looking like an average back. Artis-Payne will likely be relegated to a backup role with Stewart looking to return against the Seahawks, making his fantasy value very small this week. Owners should look elsewhere to someone who has a better chance at a full workload, barring any change in Stewart’s status for the weekend
