SF QB Brock Purdy - Week 2 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Los Angeles Rams

Brock Purdy threw for 220 yards and a pair of touchdowns in a lopsided victory over the Steelers to open up the season. He also added 20 yards on three rushing attempts, a career-high. Purdy now has 20 total touchdowns and just interceptions in just 11 career games and has the 49ers offense clicking on all cylinders.

This week, Purdy faces a Rams defense that looks pretty depleted on paper, beyond All-Pro defensive tackle Aaron Donals, of course. The Rams held Geno Smith in check last week, but the 49ers should have no trouble moving the ball with Purdy behind center. Expect another quality, efficient outing for the second-year passer out of Iowa State, making him a quality streamer or fringe QB1 option in most leagues.

SF QB Brock Purdy - Week 1 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 at Pittsburgh Steelers

For some reason it’s easy to overlook this, but Brock Purdy was the QB8 over the final six weeks of the regular season in 2022. He did it based on efficiency, finishing the year with 13 touchdowns and only four interceptions in six games and he completed 67% of his passes. Purdy benefits from having tremendous weapons around him and he progresses through reads at an advanced rate considering his relative inexperience as a starter.

He starts the season off against a tough Pittsburgh defense that ranked 13th in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks last year and is led by T.J. Watt, who had 22.5 sacks in 2021 before injuries limited him last season. Purdy should be a reasonably steady streaming option and fringe QB1 with the potential to toss multiple touchdowns in every outing, but this might not be the best week to use him. We have him ranked as a low-end QB2 against a tough and aggressive defense.

SF QB Brock Purdy - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
A fraction of a season from Brock Purdy worked out brilliantly for the 49ers in 2022. The same could happen for the crafty fantasy owner in 2023, as the no-longer "Mr. Irrelevant" is coming off surgery on his right elbow. Purdy's recovery is going well. On July 13, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reported that Purdy's rehab is on schedule and he is on track to start the season opener, having experienced no setbacks. The team hopes that Purdy can return at some point late in training camp. Assuming all goes well, Purdy will be under center Week 1 and benefiting from a supporting cast that includes RB Christian McCaffrey, TE George Kittle and WRs Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk. Remember, the rookie shocked the NFL with his steely play down the stretch in 2022, guiding San Francisco to six straight wins to finish the regular season and playoff wins against the Seahawks and Cowboys. Including the playoffs, Purdy posted a 16-4 TD-INT ratio and tossed multiple TD passes in seven straight games.

Fantasy Downside
San Francisco won't rush his recovery with 2021 No. 3 pick Trey Lance and 2018 No. 3 pick Sam Darnold on the depth chart.

2023 Bottom Line
As 4for4's John Paulsen notes, there is a lot of upside to Purdy as a QB2 or QB3 who has displayed top-seven production in an eight-game sample. Paulsen added: "He’s not much of a runner but does score the occasional rushing touchdown, and Kyle Shanahan’s passing attack is as QB-friendly as any in the league." The key factor here is the price is right.

SF QB Brock Purdy - Week 17 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 17 at Las Vegas Raiders

Brock Purdy had a modest 234 yards, two touchdowns, and a pick against the Commanders last week. He has now led the 49ers to wins in all three of his starts and has bred new optimism in the fan base, despite being only a modest fantasy option in two of his three starts.

This week, Purdy has a nice matchup against the Raiders, who rank 24th in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks. We should see fringe-QB1 options against a vulnerable opponent, but there is still risk based on game script. The 49ers might run away with this one with Jarrett Stidham set to start. Still, Purdy should be considered one of the top streaming options and is a great pivot for managers who were counting on one of the injured or benched quarterbacks for the fantasy finals.

SF QB Brock Purdy - Week 16 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 16 vs. Washington Commanders

Brock Purdy played through an oblique injury last week to lead the 49ers to a 21-13 victory over the Seahawks. Purday played efficiently in the game, finishing with 217 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He now has a 6/1 TD/Int. ratio in the last three games and his ability to run through progressions and process the defense quickly is impressive, particularly for a rookie.

This week, Purdy has a tough matchup against the Commanders, who rank second in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks. Purdy has been efficient enough to warrant fantasy consideration, but expect a low-scoring affair, making him more of a QB2 or streaming option than a bonafide starter.

SF QB Brock Purdy - Week 15 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 15 at Seattle Seahawks

Brock Purdy has looked good in his two games, with a 67.2% completion percentage and a 4/1 TD/Int ratio. He also ran one in last week and led the 49ers to a wildly lopsided victory over the Buccaneers.

Purdy is dealing with an oblique injury, leaving his status questionable for Thursday’s tilt against the Seahawks. Assuming he starts, however, he has a below average matchup. Seattle ranks 12th in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks, and with the questionable oblique, it’s best to consider Purdy a low-end QB2 option this week. He’s definitely worth rostering in deeper leagues just in case he continues to pop.

SF QB Brock Purdy - Week 14 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 14 vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Brock Purdy filled in admirably for the injured Jimmy Garoppolo last week, throwing for 210 yards, two touchdowns, and a pick in a convincing victory over the Dolphins. With Garoppolo out for the remainder of the season, Purdy seems to be the most likely starter for the rest of the way. He has a nice matchup against the Buccaneers this week. Tampa Bay ranks 22nd in aFPA to opposing quarterbacks, so Purdy has a chance to follow up his promising debut with a quality start. However, it’s too risky to trust him in 1QB leagues. Pick him up on waivers if you have a deep bench, just in case he pops with all the weapons around him. However, leave him on the bench for now.
