Scouting report

DET TE Brandon Pettigrew - Week 6, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 – Brandon Pettigrew vs. Minnesota Vikings
On three targets last week from Matthew Stafford, Brandon Pettigrew finished with two receptions for 12 yards. Even with Calvin Johnson battling an ankle injury and going to miss some time, Pettigrew just isn’t getting enough looks to warrant even being on a fantasy roster.

DET TE Brandon Pettigrew - Week 5, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 – Brandon Pettigrew vs. Buffalo Bills
Brandon Pettigrew had his first reception since Week 1 in the win at the Jets last Sunday. Brandon collected two grabs for 19 yards, but still has just three catches on the season. Eric Ebron caught a TD in the win and will be utilized more in the passing game as the season continues. There is no reason for Pettigrew to be on your fantasy roster, even with Calvin Johnson and Joseph Fauria battling ankle injuries.

DET TE Brandon Pettigrew - Week 4, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 – Brandon Pettigrew vs. New York Jets
Brandon Pettigrew continues to be a non-factor in the Lions offense. He did not catch a pass for the second straight game and should not be taking up a fantasy roster spot.

DET TE Brandon Pettigrew - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 – Brandon Pettigrew vs. Green Bay Packers
Matthew Stafford threw the ball 48 times in the loss to the Panthers last Sunday, but Brandon Pettigrew did not receive a look. He should not be on your fantasy roster.

DET TE Brandon Pettigrew - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 – Brandon Pettigrew vs. Carolina Panthers
Brandon Pettigrew was a non-factor in the home win over the Giants last Monday night, finishing with just a nine-yard grab. Joseph Fauria was targeted three times and Eric Ebron twice, so none of the Lions TEs did too much. While Ebron will likely receive more playing time as the season progresses, none of the three are worthy of a fantasy start at this point.

DET TE Brandon Pettigrew - Week 1, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 1 – Brandon Pettigrew vs. New York Giants
Brandon Pettigew will still see some looks from Matthew Stafford, but it’s tough to imagine him reaching the 41 grabs he posted last season. In addition to TD-magnet Joseph Fauria, the Lions used their No. 1 pick on TE Eric Ebron who they are expecting to take over as the main receiving TE once he becomes more familiar with the offense. There isn’t really much reason to have Pettigrew on your roster at this point.

DET TE Brandon Pettigrew - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Fantasy Upside
As the Lions starting TE last season, Brandon Pettigrew finished with 41 grabs for 416 yards and two TDs. The 10.1 yards per catch was his best since 2010. At 6’5” and 265 pounds he’s a big target for Matthew Stafford and a load to bring down.

Fantasy Downside
Joseph Fauria took away a lot of the red zone opportunities and now Brandon will also have to compete with first-round selection Eric Ebron. His reception, yardage and TD total were his lowest since his rookie campaign in ’09. He’s missed two games in each of the past two seasons. Pettigrew was over 50 yards only twice last season.

Bottom Line
Pettigrew’s better days are likely behind him. With new OC Joe Lombardi coming over from New Orleans, the plan is for Ebron to take on a Jimmie Graham role with the Lions. Brandon will likely be used more as a blocker this season. He's not worth fantasy consideration.
