Scouting report

SD RB Branden Oliver - Week 9, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 9 - Oliver vs. Miami
Brendan Oliver carried just 13 times last week for 36 yards, but did catch seven passes for 27 yards. The Bolts were hoping to control the game and the clock a little more against Denver but ended up falling behind and trying to play catch-up.

It's been two average games for Oliver the past two weeks after going off for over 100 yards and a TD in Weeks 5 and 6. This week, Oliver gets the Dolphins who are ranked 17th in allowing fantasy points to running backs. San Diego should try to come out and establish the run a little in this one, as Miami ranks fifth in allowing fantasy points to QBs. As a result, Oliver comes in as a high-end RB2 on our list.

With a bye in Week 10, there's a chance Ryan Mathews comes back for Week 11 in a nice matchup against the Raiders. Oliver's use in the passing game should mean he has a role going forward this season, perhaps even a Danny Woodhead-like role. However, the SOS for the Chargers RBs is very tough from Week 12 through the end of the season.

SD RB Branden Oliver - Week 8, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 8 - Oliver vs. Denver
Last week, Branden Oliver rushed 15 times for 67 yards and added two catches for 11 yards.

After Oliver exploded on the scene a couple weeks ago with back-to-back 100 yard games, this wasn't the type of fantasy numbers owners were hoping for even in a somewhat tougher matchup against the Chiefs. But the Chiefs were ahead at times in this game, which kept Oliver's carries in check.

This week, it's the Broncos who are sixth in allowing fantasy points to RBs so it's a tougher matchup on paper. The Bolts have been successful in the past, at least at times, running the ball to keep Peyton Manning off the field and keeping the game close, so it's likely they try to use a similar strategy this week, which means Oliver could be in store for a big day. But if this doesn't go as planned, Oliver owners could end up disappointed again. He's ranked 12th this week and is more of an RB2 play on our list.

SD RB Branden Oliver - Week 7, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 - Oliver vs. Kansas City
Branden Oliver had 101 yards on 26 carries last week. He added a TD and 23 receiving yards.

He was the all-out number-one option in the running game last week with Ryan Mathews and Donald Brown out. It was a great matchup with the Raiders, but this week is a little tougher at least on paper. Oliver should be the bell cow again this week and sits at ninth in our ranking making him a low-end RB1 start. The Chiefs rank 14th in allowing fantasy points to RBs.

SD RB Branden Oliver - Week 6, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 - Oliver vs. Oakland
Branden Oliver showed some potential the last few weeks and when Donald Brown had to leave the game with a concussion, Oliver rushed 19 times for 114 yards and a TD against what was supposed to be a good Jets rush defense. Oliver added four catches for 68 yards and another TD.

Oliver comes in as a solid RB2 play in our rankings this week in what is a great matchup against the Raiders who are 29th in allowing fantasy points to RBs. Oliver is ranked 13th among our backs. Brown's status is still unknown for Week 6, but even if he's a go one has to figure Oliver has earned at least a share of the workload. The team also brought back Ronnie Brown but he should be no threat to Oliver. With Ryan Mathews out a couple more weeks, Oliver has potential to be at least a short-term fill-in.

SD RB Branden Oliver - Week 5, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 - Oliver vs. NY Jets
Suddenly thrust into the RB2 role on the Chargers, Branden Oliver carried nine times for 23 yards and added four catches for 33 yards.

Donald Brown didn't give the Chargers what they expected in what was a great matchup against the Jags, so it was Oliver who started to steal some work. He could again have a role this week but the matchup against the Jets isn't a good one (ranked 7th in allowing fantasy points to RBs). If you have the space, Oliver may not be a bad guy to take a shot on coming away with more carries until Ryan Mathews gets back.

SD RB Branden Oliver - Week 4, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 - Oliver vs. Jacksonville

Branden Oliver received three rushes for 11 yards last week and now finds himself as the team's RB2 behind just Donald Brown, as Danny Woodhead is out for the season and Ryan Mathews remains sidelined.

Oliver could play a big role in this one, but it likely comes once this game is out of hand, assuming it will be. Brown should get a bulk of the work again, but Oliver could get some mopup duty in addition to a normal handful of touches. It actually could be a very good chance for the team to get him some work in garbage time, but Oliver is no doubt a risky play.
