TB RB Bobby Rainey - Week 4, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Bobby Rainey - Week 4 vs. Pittsburgh

Bad news for Bobby Rainey owners - Doug Martin appears to be healthy again. Rainey did a nice fill-in job for Martin. In Week 2 he ran for 144 yards and in Week 3 he had over 100 yards from scrimmage.

Rainey has coughed up three fumbles this season (league high) so coaches may be weary of giving him too many touches. But with Martin's injury and Rainey's talent, Rainey may be on the field for some extra snaps. He can be used as a low RB3, but don't have high expectations.

TB RB Bobby Rainey - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Bobby Rainey - Week 3 vs. Atlanta

In a surprise move the Buccaneers made Doug Martin inactive in Week 2 against the Rams. This sent Bobby Rainey up the depth chart into starting position. He made the most of his opportunity by carrying the ball 22 times for 144 yards. He also caught three passes for 30 yards. Quarterback Josh McCown vultured two rushing touchdowns away from Rainey, but that didn't spoil a terrific performance.

The Buccaneers now must prepare on a short week to face Atlanta on Thursday night. Martin has been ruled questionable for the game, leaving Rainey owners frustrated. If Martin is unable to play, Rainey will be a great option. Last year against the Falcons he finished with 167 total yards and scored three times. Even if Martin plays, Rainey will likely see a lot of touches.

The Falcons are starting to become the dream matchup for running backs this season. They have allowed the most fantasy points, and touchdowns, to opposing backs this season. If Martin can't go, Rainey can be viewed as a RB1. If Martin does play, view Rainey as a somewhat risky RB2 or flex with upside.

TB RB Bobby Rainey - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Josh McCown - Week 2 vs. St. Louis

Bobby Rainey was the team's third-down back last week and took over as the main back when Doug Martin left the game due to injury. Martin returned to practice on Thursday and looks like he'll get the start. Rainey will likely still see some touches, but it might not be enough to make an impact.

It's a favorable matchup, but lack of touches will make Rainey a poor option this week. Treat him as a RB4.

Update: Jay Glazer is reporting that Martin is OUT this week and Rainey will get the start. Rainey is an intriguing pickup and a decent flex start this week. Mike James will also be in the mix.

TB RB Bobby Rainey - 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Bobby Rainey was somewhat of a waiver wire hero last season. He came in and had some strong performances from weeks 10-16. He scored six touchdowns in that stretch and had two 100+ yard games. Underneath those impressive stats, however, are some unimpressive ones.

From weeks 12-17 Rainey averaged just 2.5 yards per carry if you take away his 80-yard run in Week 14. He also wasn't much of a factor in the passing game.

He's listed as the backup for Doug Martin on the team's depth chart, but he's nothing more than a handcuff at this point.
