Scouting report

by Matt Rittle

NE WR Aaron Dobson - Week 3, 2015 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 vs Jacksonville

After seeing one target in Week 1, Aaron Dobson had eight targets in Week 2 on his way to a nice 7-87 line. The question with Dobson has never been one of talent, but of translating his talent to the field. This isn't his first decent game, and likely won't be his last. We're just not sure about consistency yet.

Coming off his strong performance, coupled with the lack of production from fellow WR Danny Amendola, we are projecting Dobson as the Patriots WR2 on the week. However, he should be on all benches until he at least strings a few nice games together.

NE WR Aaron Dobson - Week 7, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 7 vs New York Jets
Dobson has been active the last two game days, which is a positive. He has only played between 10-15% of snaps in each week, though. He is not startable, and barely rosterable, until that changes.

NE WR Aaron Dobson - Week 6, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 6 at Buffalo
We've talked about Dobson a lot this season. "How is his foot?" "Did he mouth off to coaches?" "Maybe he didn't mouth off and has a great attitude?" In the world of fantasy, though, none of that matters. His seasonal line is 2-29, and he played only 13% of snaps in Week 5. He should be on the waiver wire in all but the deepest of leagues until his talent can start translating into playing time and fantasy points.

NE WR Aaron Dobson - Week 5, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 5 at Cincinnati
Apparently Dobson's surprise inactives the last two weeks can be blamed on mouthing off to a coach in practice. I can't help but wonder if this was a one time isolated event, or if there was some tension and attitude leading up to the event we've now heard about. Beat writers have described Dobson as very quiet, and have joked about how out of character this event would seem for him. This might point to a locker room and practice field where tensions are understandably running rather high. We don't know the whole story here, but it is interesting to finally get a reason for his inactive status of late.

All this makes for more conversation fodder, though, than fantasy relevant data. In fantasy, just leave Dobson on your bench, if not the waiver wire, until we see some actual production from him in 2014.

NE WR Aaron Dobson - Week 4, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 4 at Kansas City
Dobson was an unexpected and healthy scratch last week. No official report or statement has been released explaining this. Some local sports chatter theorized the Patriots wanted to focus on shorter routes in the passing game, which Dobson didn't help as much with as others. Kenbrall Thompkins and Danny Amendola went on to combine for two targets in that game. Until further notice, Dobson can be safely left on your bench. We did not rank him this week.

NE WR Aaron Dobson - Week 3, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 3 vs Oakland
Dobson had two targets in week two, catching one of them for 13 yards. It was encouraging to see him play on nearly 50% of the offensive snaps, though.

We still await Dobson coming into fantasy relevance this year, but it seems likely it will happen at some point. Our ranks this week of WR67 and WR71 in PPR express that we'd much rather keep Dobson on our bench as an upside stash, than start him in Week 3.

NE WR Aaron Dobson - Week 2, 2014 Fantasy Football Outlook

Week 2 at Minnesota
Dobson was a bit of a surprise inactive in week one. We haven't heard too much news or updates this week, either. Hopefully he's healing up nicely and can play again shortly.

We're ranking him as WR84 and WR86 in PPR. That rank would go up or down depending on his status this weekend, though. It's a situation to monitor, but I'd try avoid starting him in Week 2 even if he plays. Let's see him healthy and on the field first.
